EDIT: F5 for some changes! I couldn't help but add some things in after i decided the lack of cushion was bugging me.
Combined the background and the figure - will add additional shading digitally to unify them.
I'll probably be working on that and then colouring/etc in a stream a little later if anyone's interested. If so i'll post it in a journal.
This is designed to fit in a wide format (12:7 will be the final aspect ratio) so i can print playmats of it... as there needs to be more sphinx paraphernalia in gaming..!
Anyway, i won't bore you and your submission pages with more WIPs, just the final piece once it's coloured.

Ugh, i don't know what it is about FA, but it's really terrible at keeping a file intact and crisp looking. I even did the resubmit trick so it was not shrunk, but somehow it's all blurry and gross. FA displays it larger than it needs to be for some weird reason. Oh well... go look at it on dA for a nice clean view. -> http://ecmajor.deviantart.com/art/Aerie-Graphite-WIP-407889523

I really like the long neck - it's the thing people have mentioned multiple times that they find out of place, but i dunno. I think it's exotic looking! Maybe the fact that she has a human-ish face makes people expect her to have similar proportions below the chin?
Hmm, that's a good question... Upon trying to answer it, it turns out i don't have a well-defined size for them in my mind. This sphinx is pretty large, as those steps are designed for human-sized beings. But i don't know if she's average or not ;P

Well there's nothing wrong with it, but it does add an alien quality. Like you say people probably expect the neck to be more proportionate to a human because of her face. And head in general.
I see. Truth to be told I was looking for a size to compare to Phrixus XD. I find Sphinxes to be quite enticing. He is rather large himself.

I think the long neck actually makes more sense to me in respects to how the creature would hold itself. It would help the head be at the right angle while standing, and have a good range of flexibility to look around without too much strain (like a antelope or bird.) Especially with those forwards facing eyes :D
