One of my assignments at school was to closely study Walt Kelly's comic strip Pogo and copy it as close as possible to make three original, autobiographical strips of my own. Obviously I'm not as skilled an artist as Kelly was, but I think I did an OK job and the assignment was fun. I learned a lot about using a nib, although I still hate lettering by hand. I'm so bad at it! Aside from a little bit of clean-up and resizing, these three strips were done with traditional materials: pencil, pen nib, and brush pen.
And yes, they are all based on true events.
Starring (in order of appearance): an Australian friend represented by a platypus, myself as a hyena (since Kelly never drew straight up humans for Pogo), and my cats Gil and Hana.

Yup. She was an elderly dog when I decided to adopt her. We only had her for a little over a year when she succumbed to her cancer and passed away shortly after I moved away to school. She had a hard life, but I think my friends and I gave her a happy last year, spoiling her with food and attention. At least I hope we did. I'm happy to have met her. No regrets!
First, I'm sorry about your dog. Beyond that, well, you seem to have something on the ball in regards to ol' Walt. I could spend pages talking about his art and writing, but suffice it to say that reading old Pogo provides not only amazing cartooning but great satiric insight into mid century America, much the way that Gary Trudeau would later do for the 60's, 70's and beyond.
"And what is the happy ending
When the foot fits the shoe?
And where are the knightly wending
In the vast blasts of blue,
Tracking up clean tomorrows
In search of a bright today,
Counting their well-worn sorrows
In the hopes they'll go away?"
The End (of Cinderola and all that)

It was hard getting used to the writing at first because of how verbose the animals were in their Okefenokee dialect, but once I started getting used to it I really enjoyed it. And yeah, I had no idea Pogo was so political going into it! Imagine my surprise to see the animals goofing around with caricatures with Nixon, etc. Brilliant.
Loved reading your comics chu and nice to hear things are going well at school, I'm sorry to hear that your dog passed I remember when you mentioned about how she had cancer in a stream u was doing trying to keep yourself busy and stuff. Keep at it chu I'm cheering for ya :)
