In honor of my favorite holiday rolling around the corner this month, I’m gonna be drawing some of my favorite characters/creatures from ghost stories and spooky folktales/legends.
U’tlun’ta, or “Spearfinger”, was a hag-like creature in Cherokee mythology who roamed the woods and mountain trails of the eastern side of Tennessee and the western part of North Carolina, using her long, spear-like forefinger to cut out the livers of hunters and lost children.
With her stone skin, Spearfinger was invincible, if not for the hidden heart inside her right hand. Although she was slain after a chickadee told a vengeful hunting party of her weakness, some say her spirit still haunts her old paths at Whiteside Mountain.
