Halloween Icon (Commission by Jonas)
Another themed icon done by the amazingly talented
jonas
This one is part of a Halloween theme that he was doing, in which his customers chose a character from a horror movie and had their character portrayed as that character.
My choice here is a nasty fellow called Molasar from a rather (perhaps rightly) underappreciated movie from 1984 called The Keep. Based loosely on a novel by P. Paul Wilson (who hated the movie), and directed by Michael Mann, the film had a notoriously troubled production and came out kind of a mess. It does have a cult following largely due to its soundtrack having been done by Tangerine Dream. It also features a very young Sir Ian McKellan chewing the scenery like nobody's business, along with Jurgen Prochnow, Gabriel Byrne, a very hot looking Scott Glen getting naked at the drop of a hat, and lots of lasers, smoke machines and synths.
For all of its faults, the movie was beautifully filmed and oozed atmosphere. I'm a sucker for atmosphere.
It also featured the actor who played Bib Fortuna from Return of the Jedi in a rubber monster suit playing Molasar, an energy vampire of sorts trapped beneath an ancient fortress in the mountains of Romania, freed by some very stupid Nazis. Stupid and delicious Nazis. I always liked him.
So here this is.

I think it's mainly that the studio (Paramount) didn't see the point in investing the money in a DVD release. The director is pretty embarrassed at how the film turned out, having been butchered by the studio, and hasn't wanted to revisit it. There have been online petitions for years to try and get a DVD release but for now only bootlegs from the laserdisc version are available.
