Excerpt from chapter 1:
The late morning sun slanted between the trees and through the wide windows of the musty study to land at Johnathan Pennyfare's feet.
It was a glorious mid summer day out, but he was trapped in the crowded room, reading over the last of the legal papers.
It was not enough for the government that his parents were dead, they needed a stone's worth of papers to prove the fact.
“Someday,” he muttered to himself as he signed yet another document, “The chaps who constructed this damned process will lose one they love and then they'll have to go through it themselves.”
The thought was cold comfort to him, even in the warmth of the sun, as he at last made it to the final page.
Pausing for a long moment, he looked at the final line to sign.
Reaching across the desk, he lifted the fine, white bone china tea cup that his mother had ordered from India. It had made its way here at great expense on a steam ship, arriving no more than a week ago.
She'd never had the chance to see it.
A sip, and he grimaced from the taste of cold tea.
He signed the paper.
A moment later, as if he'd been reading Johnathan's mind, Manson knocked softly at the door.
The old valet was dressed impeccably, as always. But Johnathan knew him well enough to be able to pick out the faint lines of sleeplessness that ringed his eyes.
“All the paperwork is in order I take it, young master?” he asked, his voice pulled and gravely from the pipe that hung from the left side of his mouth.
Johnathan glanced up at him.
“Yes.” A moment later he was able to force a smile to his lips. At least that was one thing he hadn't lost. Manson. The servant had been with his parents since before Johnathan was born. “It is. I guess that makes it official, now doesn't it.”

Really loved this story. It was great how you handled his change and the reactions of the townsfolk. The ending was a bit abrupt, would have been nice to end with the wedding rather than the retrieval perhaps?
Hope to see more transformation stories from you in the future. Reading Little Brother to Lion next.

Hmm... you're right, the ending did come rather abruptly. That's a problem I have with many of my stories! Who knows though -- there's always a chance I may be inspired to put together a sequel...
Sadly, I don't have much else in the way of transformation stories, this being my first. I'd love to hear what you think of Little Brother to a Lion though!
Other stories you may be interested in:
The Hunters -- My main series, the main characters are a wolf and a lion
Police Dog -- If you're interested in a more emotional punch, and likely my best story

I adored the story. It's the first I've ever been addicted to reading. There was "no mean amount" of little mistakes, a few faulty conjugations, commas left out, one of the "I"'s you were talking about in the authors note, but regardless, I relished every word of it. It's been a good long while since I enjoyed a story as much as I did this one, and for that, I thank you.
I am a bit disappointed in the ending though. It was a little short for my liking. Ah well, I'll just have to imagine the rest! "Huff huff huff"

It's great to know you liked it. And you're right, the ending was somewhat... lacking. That's the problem with spending the entire story building up the fact he's not a best -- it's kind of rules out a real action oriented climax.
Though hey, you never know, it could always leave the door open for a sequel!

...sequel
Actually, I just read the first chapter of "Police Dog," so a sequel shouldn't be necessary for a while.
If you DO, however, feel inspired to revisit the tale, I'd be more than enthusiastic to read it!
My only worry is that the writing style or the personalities of the characters might change... a sequel is a tricky thing...
And I should say, I'm happy with where it ended. It was a great climax and a perfect resolve.
Anything you write, I'm sure I'll lap it right up. (Pun intended)

Well no promises, but you never know. This is in fact the first time in over five years I'm not actively writing a story...
I hope you enjoy Police Dog, Forty-Two is one of my most popular characters. And I don't think the ending to PD will disappoint!
And thank-you, *Bows* for the honour of your first fave.
Hmm... and judging by your profile you may also be partial to Little Brother to a Lion that takes place in space...

Actually... not quite!
This book is completely independent of The Hunters though there are a few subtle call outs here and there.
I've had several people ask me if the two series are connected. They are, but not in an obvious way. Much like Jon got a spin-off of sorts in Police Dog, this book was meant to be a spin off to give Rebecca a chance to spend some time in a different period of history. That didn't really work out as intended, but if you look close you can still see it there.
