There is an association of cursed artifacts having to be just that, an artifact. Something from the past, something that would be easy to avoid simply because it's so much different from anything you would use today. However, time moves forward. Even an item that seems otherwise modern can develop its own history, and the description of artifact soon covers more familiar objects that you'd like.
