He clearly has anti-magic resilience effect cast on himself (or has a gear that does that for him)

Nope. The missiles should be nullified by that. They are clearly striking him. Just not that effective.

I was thinking more of a defense up effect on his body that makes magic attacks much less effective, rather than some kind of invisible shield

For most other spells that'd work. However, magic missile is not an elemental energy type, so cannot be resisted. And since it's magic, damage reduction does not apply.

Now before this turns into a discussion on alignment, I'll take my excessive D&D nerdery elsewhere.

if the wizard is high enough level to shoot 5 bolts of magic missile and that's all they have to panic throw at the doombold, then it's his own fault.
