“Eddie!” It’d been a few days since the afternoon that had made the Umbreon’s life very interesting. It felt as if it’d been longer than just a week, like time was somehow forcing itself to stretch out for what felt like years. Edna “Eddie” Nochtmon was a resourceful ‘morph and had done everything she could not to think about the possibilities. She’d been keeping herself busy when not visiting Vince in the hospital by spending time with her friends and family as well as trying to concentrate on school work. Try as she might she still had trouble completely forgetting about it.
“Eddie!” The voice called again and finally caught her attention. Blinking she looked up and towards the voice of her teammate Dusty Briar. The Bulbasaur looked at her with concern; a look that the Umbreon had been seeing a lot over the last week and one she had started to get a little sick of.
“Yeah, hey Dusty,” Eddie responded with a smile, “What’s up?”
“Well, uhh. Class is over and you were zoning,” Dusty said as she rubbed the back of her head gently. It was seventh period, Battle Basics with Coach Marceau, and it’d been the hardest one for Eddie to get through during the day. Vincent had never given her much of a break during the class, pushing her as hard as he pushed everyone else, which was something she was grateful for. He wasn’t there, though, and not having the big ‘mon around during the class continued to reminded her of where he was.
“Oh, yeah it is,” Eddie smiled and pushed herself up from the bleacher she’d been resting on, “Sorry was just thinking there,”
“You’ve been doing that a lot, Gidget,” Libby DeVito, Eddie’s team leader, walked up towards her along with Jeffery the Espeon last member of their team, “It’s okay to miss Big Blue,”
“I’m fine guys, really,” She adjusted her jacket and looked back to them with a smile.
“It’s not good to hold emotions in,” Dusty warned her suddenly which drew a curious blink from Eddie.
“I’m not…guys, I’m okay. Things are fine,” She looked between them. All through the week she’d been talked to by just about everyone who was coming to try and comfort her; her team, Vincent’s team as well as their friends and several faculty members. It bugged her because she knew what she was doing. It also bugged her because in some ways it felt like people were already giving her condolences.
“Hey, Eddie, right?” A Lairon who’d just recently joined the class walked up towards her. Duos stood just outside where the others were looking in, a look of worry appeared on his face. The Umbreon looked over towards him as the others turned as well.
“Yes…Duos, was it?” Eddie asked as the Lairon nodded, “What can I do you for?”
“I was just wondering how Vincent is doing?” Duos fidgeted with something in his hands as he asked the question, the same one he had for the last few days now. The Larion had come to know Vincent recently thanks to some extra training sessions they’d been doing together. Eddie sighed as he asked, not wanting to be rude to the kid but also getting very tired of how many times she’d answered the question.
“Still no change, but I’ll let folks know if anything does when I visit him today,” A few others students quietly gathered around the group, causing Eddie to become even more flustered.
“Why’re you still even bothering with him,” Another voice suddenly popped up. Everyone turned to look at Xander the Elekid as he reclined against a wall, arms crossed. He’d come to gain a rep for being able to say the worst thing at the worst time when he wanted to, “Good chance he ain’t making it,”
“Don’t you dare say that about Vincent!” Duos immediately protested, his hands grinding into fists. A few of the other students turned towards Xander with less than thrilled looks on their faces.
“What?” Xander said and shrugged, “Not my fault I’m the only one sayin’ it. The babe should be thinking ‘bout the possibility of getting herself a new man. A real man,”
“I’ll let you know if I see one,” Eddie said back to him evenly. Tugging on her shirt for a moment the Umbreon turned and started to walk away from everyone.
“Not like he’ll even be the same if he does come out of it,” Xander continued to point out as he took a few steps after her, “Don’t know what you’re gonna get,” Eddie stopped in her tracks but didn’t turn around. Duos’ started to make motion like he was going to try and put Xander in his place before Eddie spoke.
“Xander, I’m going to say this once and I’m going to say it slowly so it gets through that thick skull of yours,” The Umbreon started, though she didn’t turn to face him, “Vincent is more of a man than you’ll ever be. Even if he comes out of this and isn’t able to walk he could still kick your ass both physically and as a Pokemon,” With that she continued on her way, heading towards the door and out into the afternoon.
“Whatever,” Was all Xander said in response before he headed out in another direction. Everyone else looked between themselves unsure if they should intervene or not.
“Think she’s going to be okay?” Libby finally asked her other two teammates.
“I’ve known Eddie a long time, yo,” Jeffery finally said, hands thrust into his pockets, “She’s a tough ‘mon. But I’ve never seen her deal with anything like this. But I’d trust her to be able to get through somethin’ like this way better than I could,” Libby and Dusty weren’t sure if they heard right, that Jeffery actually said something supportive and intelligent. Eventually they just nodded and headed out of school themselves.
“You’re starting to cause me a lot of grief, big guy,” Eddie had intended to visit Vincent at the hospital even before the events at the end of school. She hadn’t managed to make it there every day like she’d hoped, but she’d still been there as much as possible. She felt a little silly doing it considering there was no one else and she was more or less talking to herself since he was boring for a conversation at the moment. She wanted to be there, though, just in case he woke up so she could be the one to welcome him back to the world of the awakened.
A part of her was scared by her reaction. She’d always been a rational ‘mon who tried to look at things in simple terms. Here she was faced with a situation she never thought she’d experience in a million years. She’d only been dating Vincent for a short amount of time, no more than a month and a half and yet she’d already been through so much with him. He’d gone out of his way to bring her along for a trip to visit his tribe on the Orange Islands which was very romantic she had to admit. She didn’t exactly care for all the death glares and questions about when she’d be having babies she’d received while there, but over all she couldn’t complain as it’d been fun.
His family had also been very welcoming to her by inviting her along or over for dinner and even going so far as including her father. Her father had been another surprise to her as he’d tried to hold onto her at first. She knew that he cared about her, but the fact that for the first two weeks he barely let her go out with Vincent had shocked her. Eventually they sat down and had a heart to heart as her dad admitted he was scared of losing his little girl just like he’d lost her mother. Eddie had comforted him and reminded him that no matter what she’d always be his daughter, just that she had started looking more and more to the real world. Eventually he accepted it and was further comforted after meeting Vince’s family, though he was still a little leery of his daughter getting all cozy with a Water type. Being a Flareon she understood his apprehension about it all.
She swore, though, she’d never get this attached to any ‘mon, at least not so early in a relationship. Here Vincent was laid out on a bed and unresponsive to outside stimuli, and here she was fighting back the tears of seeing him in such a situation. Not that she felt bad about mourning what had happened to someone she’d grown so close to, even if in such a short period of time. It’d only been a month and a half, what was she doing so broken up. Taking in a deep breath Eddie sighed and just reached out to take his massive hand in her own.
“Everyone at school acts like I’m in mourning or something,” she started talking to him, even though she knew there was no response coming, “Like I should prepare for the worst. I know that all your friends are a lot more optimistic about it…but I even see it in their eyes. Everyone’s worried you’re not going to make it out.
“I wish you were around right now, Vincent. It’s just…I don’t know. It’s hard to see you like this. You mean a lot to me and I don’t want to lose that,” Eddie slowly cracked a smile, “I’m too young to be widowed like this,”
“Don’t tell me I’ve been out that long,” the voice was soft and barely discernable. Thankfully Eddie was close enough to hear it which caused her to look up sharply. Slowly Vincent stirred and grimaced as he realized how stiff he was. At first he started to try and sit up but was stopped as the Umbreon slowly pushed him back to the bed.
“Easy there, Vince. And no…it’s only been a week,” Vincent couldn’t much fight against her in his condition and did as he was told. Slowly his eyes fluttered open as he smiled towards her.
“Was gonna say…” he deadpanned and winced again, “What happened?”
“You passed out,” Was her initial answer. Vincent stopped and opened his eyes to give her a look which caused her to giggle.
“I gathered that much,” He grumped, “Wouldn’t be in a hospital if I hadn’t. I mean, what’s wrong?” Eddie hesitated for a moment, not wanting to answer before finally she relented.
“Doctors said you have an enlarged heart,” She finally told him.
“Well, yeah, I hear I have a big heart a lot,” He joked back which drew a look from her this time.
“They said that it’s larger than normal and thicker,” she continued to explain, “Meaning that it’s not as efficient. It has to work harder in order to get blood through your body,”
“Okay…so what’s that mean to me?” He asked after a moment, “Is there a pill I can take or operation to fix it?” Again Eddie hesitated, fear gripped her as she worried how he was going to react to all this.
“Maybe I should get the nurse so they can check on you,” She started to stand up. His massive hand gripped onto hers and prevented her from going anywhere.
“Please, Eddie,” He begged quietly, “I need to know.” She stopped and looked at him as her heart broke. She fought back the tears in her eyes as she settled back down.
“There’s nothing they can do, Vincent,” She finally said, “You’re…going to have to moderate your physical activity,” the Poliwrath looked at her with an unreadable face as it slowly churned in his head, the very fact slowly settled on him as he realized the depth of what it is she was saying.
“Does that mean…” He couldn’t quite finish the sentence as his voice trailed off.
“You have to give up battling,” she finally finished for him. Eddie moved so she could hug the large ‘mon, laying atop of him to do so given the bed barely had enough room for her to climb along side, “Doctors say you should be able to still coach but you can’t actually battle anymore,” Her tears quietly rolled down her cheeks to fall on the blanket that covered up Vincent. The Poliwrath moved his arms to hug her tightly as he needed the support. Silence hung in the air thickly, the beep of the heart monitor the only sound for several minutes.
“I’m glad you’re here,” He finally whispered to her, “I’m glad I have you right now,” Eddie looked up, not sure what brought that on.
“I just told you that you had to give up battling and you’re glad to see me?” She was dumbfounded by his response, though Vincent just smiled and looked to her.
“If I had to hear that news from anyone, I’d want it to be you,” He answered, “Because I know you won’t lie to me. And because I know you’ll be here for me afterwards,” Eddie lost it at that and buried her face into Vince’s chest as tears fell freely. All the emotion and frustration of the last week finally let itself come to the surface. Quietly the two lay there and simply held each other, both needing the support of the other. Eventually Eddie pulled away to wipe the tears from her eyes, smiling at the Frogmon.
“Going to take me a lot more than fainting to get rid of me, Vincent Tellamapolou,” she told him before she climbed off the bed, “I’d better go let people know you’re awake,” He reached out to kiss her before she could get to far away and then let her slide off.
“Tell them to get me some decent food while you’re at it,” He muttered and tried to stretch out his back which drew a laugh from Eddie. She padded out of the room and told the nursing station that he was up in case they wanted to check in on him, which spurred one of the nurses to head in. Eddie reached for her phone to start to call people and let them know the good news, but stopped for a moment. A smile crossed her face as she slowly accepted just how much she’d come to care for the big guy, and just how much he said he cared for her. She took a moment to enjoy the warm fuzzy before she popped open her phone and started dialing people.
“Hey Meg? It’s Eddie. I’ve got some good news!”

“Hey Meg? It’s Eddie. I’ve got some good news!”
You know, I think I finally figured out what it is I really like about your stories: they aren't epic. And they aren't trying to be.
They're not about world altering events or (for the most part) Life-altering. It's the fact that all of your characters or different, but not artificially extraordinary, that makes things like this arc with Vince's health seem more... special. This isn't just another chapter in a long, episodic chain of calamities; it really FEELS like a huge, and very personal, turning point.

Which leads to something I try and tell people when it comes to stories and characters: It's the journey and it's the personality that mean more than whatever you're trying to accomplish. It's that Vince is this likeable guy that had a really bad thing happen to him that makes this story, and his relationship with Eddie, not him killing a world or something like that.
And even in his tragedy and relationship with Eddie, you aren't going to extremes (and don't need to) to show powerful emotions. We can understand that they really care about each other without them getting all touchy-feely-gropey-passionate every time they meet, and we know that this news hit Vince really hard not because he exploded with emotion, but because of all the little things he did.
A lot of people don't quite understand the difference between drama and melodrama; the former makes for great story telling, and the latter is why no one with a life watches soaps.
