I've just read the Wikipedia article about the origin of kopi luwak coffee, and it answers the question of "just whose idea was this, anyways?" (oppressed Indonesian farmers wanted to try this 'coffee' stuff that they weren't allowed to harvest for themselves, and thus got a bit creative), but even so...

"vanilla flavouring" in some food products is sometimes/often the secretion from beaver anal glands. ;) It's usually labeled under "and other natural ingredients" part of the list.

Surprisingly, I've head of this one (among other scary food facts). Example: Food Coloring is banned everywhere in the world except the United States!

Actually, food colourings can be either natural (plant or animal-based) or man-made and their level of restriction depends on various studies conducted globally.

Also the beaver butt flavouring is Castoreum and it comes from scent glands close to but not in the anus. It's used in perfumes as well as to enhance strawberry/raspberry flavours. Kind of like how ambergris (sperm whale gunk) is used in perfumeries too.

For more fun, natural red food colouring often comes from cochineal, which are scale-insects that live on cacti. Cochineal is also used to dye other things like fabric.

If you're ever concerned about additives, you can look at the ingredients list! Almost all additives are given an E number and looking that up can tell you what's in them and if it's safe for you or not.

Some members in my family react to food coloring (it makes them moody) such as Red #40 and some yellows. I generally don't seem to have a reaction to it, but I try and avoid it anyway.

I'm the same, though it includes some artifical preservatives and additives too. Usually you can find pretty awesome natural additive foods, but you still gotta be careful what you eat sometimes D:

Really, if you're a coffee lover you should try it sometime. It's marvelous. :3 Not worth the usual price tag by far, mind you, but it is really, really good coffee.
