Tales of the Orphanage #2
Please leave a comment, I really would enjoy that!
==================================================================================================================================================================
The events here take place before the events of Parasite Paradise.
“Cat,” says Tec, “we are arriving at the first world, the problem seems to be coming from a nearby building. You may want to be cautious.”
“Oh Tec, how bad could it be?”
“Undeterminable, also I have a device that could allow you to detect Rift energy, here,” the device, a monocle, appeared on a table, “the rift energy will glow when you look through this, also might I recommend you at least put on some pants so no one gives you odd looks?”
“Thank you so much Tec, you may have a point about the pants too.” she says while looking at her diaper.
As the train comes to a halt, the kangaroo leaves, wearing a pair of black pants. The train disappears behind her, Tec having said it would be cloaked until she finished her goal, or needs to come back.
She walks up silently to the large building, it has a bright tan color to the outside, with numerous windows, the door a deep brown hue with a shiny doorknob. She knocks three times on the door.
“Be right there!” comes a soft yet haggard voice.
The door opens, and a white rabbit, about the same height as Cat with black hair, obviously male, and looking a little busy, he speaks, “Hello? Ahh you must be the new aide I hired, I’m Magnus. Please come in Ms...”
“Cat.” she says while entering the building, “and no, I’m not new help, I got lost nearby and was wondering if I may have some directions.”
“Ahh sure,” he says with a sad look on his face, “no problem, this is Sunshine Orphanage, I have a map to Moon Valley over in my office, just follow me.” They walked to his office, in it there was a large wooden desk, and three leather arm chairs. He went behind the desk and pulled out a map.
“Here you go ma’am.” He said handing Cat the map.
“Thank you. You said this place is an orphanage yes? Mind if I have a look around?”
He smiled at this, “Sure, please do, would you like me to give you a tour? The children are preparing for Halloween right now, ”
“Not necessary thank you.” she said and then left Magnus’ office. She knew what she had to do. Quickly pulling out the small lense she placed it over her right eye. “Okay, now where are you.” As she peered through the looking glass, she noticed something odd, a red line, throbbing along the wall. “Aha.”
She followed the line, not sure if she was heading to the right end. Down the twisting halls and the long corridors, she finally came to a bedroom. She opened the door and inside she saw a small child.
It was a tiger cub, male, orange with black stripes, he wore purple pants, and had a black ring over his right eye. His eyes glowed yellow, and his claws looked sharp. He appeared to be about eight years old. Around him there was a strong red glow. It was obvious he was the source of the rift energies.
“Who are you?” demands the small cub.
“My name is Cat, and you are?”
“Thomas. Now if you have no business with me get out!” he said, pushing Cat out, and closing the door behind her.
Okay, now what. She thought. Last time we had to kill the computer to get rid of the Rift energy, How could I do that to a mere child?
Cat.
Tec?! she thought, shocked she could hear Tec. How can I hear you?
I’m accessing your infrared data entry point, basically I’m streaming into your mind.
Creepy, but cool, do you know what I need to do to stop the Rift energies?
I believe the owner said something about Halloween yes?
Yes what of it?
Did you happen to notice that in his room there were no signs of Halloween?
Come to think of it...
Perhaps you should talk to Magnus again, maybe he can tell you why.
Not a bad idea, I think I’ll go visit him now, thanks Tec.
She rushed down the hall only to find Magnus was not in his office. Wondering where he was, she suddenly heard a chime. It was a bell. Suddenly the hall filled with orphan children, walking all to the same destination. She decided to follow them, believing Magnus would be where they were heading.
She wound up in the cafeteria. The cafeteria had three long tables, and smelled faintly of carrots. There were black and orange pendants hung up on the walls. And indeed there was Magnus, handing out the children their food. She waited for him to finish before approaching.
“Magnus.” she said.
“Ahh, Ms. Cat, how may I help you?”
“I was wondering about the boy Thomas. You said the children were preparing for Halloween, but he didn’t seem to have any interest.”
“Ahh, I thought you might notice that, why don’t we head back to my office to get some more privacy. Lisa,” he said motioning to a brown bear. “mind watching the children for me?”
“Sure,” she said, “You must be Cat, I’m Lisa, the new help Magnus confused you for.” she said while sticking out a hand in friendship.
Cat shook Lisa’s hand and then Magnus lead her back to his office.
“Now then,” he said while sitting in his chair, “about Thomas, he absolutely despises Halloween.”
“How do you mean?”
“He first arrived here on Halloween. He blamed himself for his parents dropping him off here. He developed a sense of self-loathing because of this. He is also terrified of the dark. Because of this he decided to hate Halloween just as much, it doesn't help matters that he has the same colors as Halloween. He just absolutely despises Halloween. For the past two years he’s also found ways to ruin it for everyone else too.”
“Is there a way to help him?”
“Heh, sure, same as every other cub, get him a family.”
“That may be a bit tricky.”
“You expected my job to be easy? Hah! Why don’t you try talking to him, or maybe take him yourself?”
“I can’t take him.”
“Mind if I ask you a question?”
“Shoot.”
“Why do you have such an interest in him if you can’t take him?”
“I sense a great... darkness in him.”
“Darkness?”
“Just call it a gut feeling. Please just let me talk to him some more.”
“Sure. Just don’t harm him. He should be on the playground right about now, probably under the old oak tree.” with that Cat left his office, and headed to the back of the building, where the playground was located. A small playground with a slide, swing set, big field, and a hill with a lone oak tree in the center.
Cat approached the tree, only to at first find it abandoned. She then pulled out her monocle, and indeed did see the Rift energy lines moving up the tree. She looked up only to find Thomas, who had not noticed Cat yet, sitting on a branch.
“Thomas.” Cat said calmly whilst looking at him.
“Hmmm? Akk!” cried Thomas, as he fell out of the tree.
“Woah! Gotcha!” she said when she caught him. “You need to be more careful little guy.” she said while smiling warmly.
“Let me go! Let me go!” he kept saying while struggling in Cat’s arms.
“Calm down, Thomas, I just want to talk to you. Ow!” she said, when something fell on her head. A tick was heard and a foul smell filled the nearby area.
“Peeyu! Uhg what’s that smell?!”
“Uhg one of my stink bombs.”
“And just why are you creating stink bombs?”
“Hah! Like I’d tell you!”
“Then I guess I’ll just have to keep you here until you tell me!”
It wasn’t long, maybe ten seconds at the most when...
“Okay, okay, I’ll talk!”
Cat with Thomas still in her arms walked him over to a nearby table and sat him down.
“So why did you have stink bombs?”
“I was planning on using them to ruin the Halloween party!” he said, growling.
“Why do you want to stop a party, a Halloween party none the less?”
“Because my father died on Halloween.”
“What? But I thought Magnus said-”
“Magnus doesn't know crap! My mother brought me here one year after my father died, Magnus asked about him and she just said they were separated, but that’s not true, I saw him die in front of me!”
“How did he die?”
On the verge of tears Thomas said, “We were at a party, the party was real fun, and I played with the other cubs the parents had brought with them. Someone was wearing a prisoner costume, or so we thought. As it turned out he was an escaped criminal. My daddy was a cop, and he recognized him right away. He tried to save me, the criminal had a knife and grabbed me. My father died fighting him, the criminal died in the fight too. So don’t you see? Halloween has always been terrible for me! So why can’t I make it terrible for everyone else?!” He said, rage and sorrow building and swelling in his voice and face.
“Why can’t you? Because you can’t change what happened. It wasn’t your fault that the criminal attacked or escaped the jail. Your father died for you to live a nice life, and enjoy life. Ruining other people’s lives makes you no better than that criminal at that party. You can’t change what happened. But you can keep your father’s wish alive by living a good and fun life!”
It was with that that Thomas burst out sobbing. He couldn’t stop himself, and just embraced Cat crying into her chest. Cat, holding him tight, and comforting him, realizes her monocle is still on, and sees the red energy fade into nothingness.
A few minutes passed of just silence and crying, when Thomas asked, “Cat?”
“Yes child?”
“I know you can’t adopt me.”
“What?”
“I heard you talking to Magnus earlier. I thought you were new help I would have to deal with too. Now I know you can’t adopt me, but could you just stay here with me, until the end of recess?”
“Sure child.”
The remaining hour passed in silence, after that, the sun was setting, Cat headed back to the train and Tec.
Once on board, “Good job Cat,” stated Tec, “The book has returned to its yellow state, that’s good enough for now. We will need to return here again one day.”
“Good, then let’s head off to the next story.”
They left silently in the middle of the night. Meanwhile with Magnus who was just returning to his office...
“What an interesting day this has been. Hmm?” he notices a note on his desk, “my map?”
Dear Magnus,
I regret to inform you that I no longer require your map, as my job is done, do not worry, I shall return one day. Until then I hope you will remember me.
-Farewell Cat.
“Hah, who are you Ms Kangaroo?”
Knock Knock.
“Come in.”
It was a beautiful tigress, her eyes full of tears, and regret. It was obvious she was here not to drop off, but to adopt. “Magnus, I don’t know if you remember me,” she said, “but I want my boy back! Give me Thomas!”
