It was on April 4, 2001 that the world lost a very talented anthroartist. Michael-Scot McMurry of Scottsdale, AZ succumbed to cancer on that day...
I first got to know him through his artistic work in the comic book "ZU" (from MU Press), and eventually in some of the APAzines he'd contributed to, including "Rowrbrazzle" and "Huzzah!" I began to write to him, and 'snail-mailed' some of my art of his characters in the early 1990s. We even began to discuss some of the other interests we'd both shared in (besides art).
Later on, when I'd moved to Florida and started learning how to go on the Internet, I began to send McMurry (or 'McMoo' as his friends call him) E-mail messages. Unfortunately, in the early part of this decade, I'd learned about his cancer.
There was nothing I could really do to aid him, but I did show my support by contributing some of my art to a special comic book - of which proceeds of its sales went to pay for an operation that could help put his cancer in remission. Sadly, it was a case of "too little, too late".
Said comic book - entitled "In The Zone" (a collection of artwork, by other talented people, of McMurry's coyote character 'Zonie') - has since been declared a memorial piece in his memory.

This posted image from 1993 was one panel of a full-page comic I'd drawn for 'McMoo' in "Rowrbrazzle". (I've added color to it, since then.) Based on a previous concept - in which 'Zonie' protested against the overusage of coyotes (in the howling pose) to sell all sorts of wares - I had titled it "Icon Take It or Leave It".
During mid-1993, the T.G.I. Fridays chain of eateries was giving away plastic cocktail glasses (with the purchase of any drink). Said glasses had two southwestern images - one of a cactus and one of a howling coyote - each one supporting the clear plastic cone for the beverage. (I, myself, had acquired four coyote glasses and two cactus glasses.) When I saw how the coyote was holding the cone in its mouth, I was inspired to draw the one-page comic gag, starring 'Zonie'...
When my 'fursona' showed the T.G.I. Fridays glass to 'Zonie', he ranted about it - explaining how it would've felt like, had he become the model for this drinking vessel, by tilting his head back and holding a gigantic clear plastic funnel in his mouth (so he can breathe, at least). It was bad enough when he got a stiff neck from staying in one position all day long, under the hot sun of the desert. But it was even tougher for him during the rainy season - as the posted illo exemplifies. The bobcat told the coyote that it could've been worse; instead of raining rain, it could've been raining marguaritas! Upset, 'Zonie' tells 'Rob Cat', "Marguaritas?! I still would've drowned!" to which Rob replied, "I know... but what a way to go!" :P
I hope to post more of my art of 'Zonie' and other characters from the clever mind of 'McMoo' in the near future...
