One of those "random" ideas that popped into my head: little Constance gets her spring shearing at the hands of a very pregnant Mama Rose.
Little kids always seem to have a great deal of trepidation about haircuts, I figured little lambs feel the same about shearing. Mama Rose is telling her stories to keep her distracted an amused while the clippers go snip-snip. Probably silly embarrassing stories from the grand old ewe's past.
I kind of imagine this taking place on the stoop of the shanty, basically in the street: I can remember seeing little kids being bathed like that on the island, standing in a wash-basin full of warm water while mom or aunty did the scrubbing; some kids it was obviously a favorite thing to play in the water, other kids looked like the felt the same way about it as a cat would.
Mama is dressed in a fashion I've also seen in the rural parts of the island, a comfortable sort of mish-mash of clothing that has an almost neo-tribal look to it.

I let my mom cut my hair once with scissors. Emphasis on once. She cut my ear. Never again have I let her near my head with a pair of scissors. I never would have let her have the chance in the first place if she had those shears. Look at them. I would have lost the rest of my ear instead of just being snipped.
I don't remember my mom cutting my hair, but she must have, since we were pretty poor, in the beginning, so there can't have been any trauma. We *did* have a set of shears like that, but they were in the shed, and they *had* been used for shearing - admittedly they were used for the horses and other barn-work, sheep were really uncommon in our area.
Thanks! I'm having a bit of fun going back to my "old school" ways of messing around on plain paper (copier paper) and a clip-board as I try and figure out a way to get the same effect in my other work. I also was a *liiiitle* drunk while I was shading this, but it turned out surprisingly well!
