Dial Coyote: Ch11 (Fox)
Dial was frozen solid as the cold mud and water chilled him. If he did not get out before morning he may die of the cold the way a human would if it were naked. There was just too much mud that he could not keep his body heat close to his body and the cool water was tolerable but soon would cause him to go numb.
Now something was approaching and he slowly started to twitch, then squirm, then thrash. Though his body was good and stuck and it did no use. Freezing to death by morning was the least of his concerns as soon he may end up eaten by a cougar, or have a human shoot him in the head which was sitting there for target practice. He did not want to be eaten, or worse; gutted and have his pelt displayed in a human den. That thought alone made him try harder to escape.
“Stupid mud; I hate you. Stupid frogs I hate you too for laughing at my pain.” he thrashed around trying to escape.
“CRACK” another sound from above.
“…hello…” Dial whispered timidly.
The thought that terrified him most was that nothing had answered back. Most bad things would not. A few seconds later something dark had walked into view. No cougar or human; but a demonic thing that may have come to eat him! Maybe this was death itself waiting to claim him when he died. For a moment Dial nearly crapped himself as he forgot what the shadow fox looked like in its other form. Just when he thought it could not get any worse he cringed in annoyance when a familiar laugh filled his big coyote ears.
“Ha ha ha look at you.”
The spirit fox stood behind him on the ridge in full spirit form with glowing yellow eyes. He looked like he had come straight from some dark dimension for his soul.
“AHH!” Dial yelled in fright at the top of his lungs and a distressed coyote yelp came out.
The fox lowered its posture quick and timid way then it shifted into a normal looking fox form. It then barked an order at him in a much quieter volume.
“What the hell… keep your voice down stupid pup, there are dogs in the area and we do not want them to join us.”
“Don’t do that, you terrified me…wait…dogs...where!?”
“There are dogs everywhere these days. Stupid humans, and their stupid dogs!”
“I don’t think I have ever met a dog personally. Maybe there are friendly dogs?”
“Don’t be stupid! All dogs are horrible bitey things that rip creatures like us to shreds. I like to do the same to them after they die. I would murder every last one of them if I could!”
Just a moment ago Dial was reminded that this was no mere fox, but a scary spirit in fox skin disguise. He had not seen it in that scary form since the time he was dreaming. If he needed validation his dream was real this was the proof. Dial stared at him with fear and fascination. Though a chill ran down his spine, was something telling him the fox was dangerous? The fox’s attention was divided and eventually he turned to face the coyote and tilted his head slightly.
“what now?”
“Sometimes I forget you are not just an ordinary fox. Um…you are an ally right? Are you here to help me get out?”
The fox grinned as though it was a great compliment to be called no ordinary fox.
“Silly coyote has to work on his manners and do Fox favors before Fox decides to be so generous. Or maybe he will owe favors instead?”
Dial wondered what that meant. Maybe he had been a little rude or unfair to the fox but it had proven far too tricky to trust. It was very provocative and annoying and he even may have been trying to hurt Tony earlier… he was not sure. He still worried this fox was planning to kill tony and thus Dial did not fully trust it no matter how much it acted generous. It had never revealed much about itself and clearly had plenty to hide. Dial just knew that it had some kind of alternate motive. It had acted way too friendly too fast. Dial felt its nice behavior was fake, and that it only wanted something from him. It had been trying too hard to make a friend out of him. Yet he had seen it be a bit malicious and cruel at times and he did not like that. He recalled his own little prank with the leash and how it had amused the fox greatly. Seeing the fox approve only made Dial feel guiltier. This fox however seemed to lack any guilt or morality yet it acted sweet and trust worthy which just did not make sense. Something was up and Dial knew it, the question was what?
“Something on your mind coyote… you certainly think too much don’t you.”
“Sorry I am not used to conversation yet, spent most of my life not speaking to anyone. However; you tend to give me far too much to think about. It makes me curious but cautious around you because I still don’t know you very well.”
“A wise trait of most wild animals; though you have been tamed by humans.”
“No I haven’t”
“Oh really… were you thinking about them coming to rescue you, taking you back to their home. They lock you in a cage and forget about you. Then make you do tricks.”
“Hey now… I will make up my own choices so stop trying to influence me…deal?”
The fox sighed. “Fine have it your way, I tried to warn you. Humans are pesky things, but I suppose they amuse me, sort of like you do. A coyote who wants to be human but is a coyote?”
“Um… no. I think I am perfectly happy being a coyote”
“Would you give up that wit of yours. Cause coyotes don’t think like humans and you certainly do”
Dial pondered for a moment but could see clearly the Fox was trying to unsettle him again the way it had the prior night. Dial realized the fox probably was bored and just found him a source of entertainment. Nothing better to do he supposed. Unlike most creatures who dial expected to have a connection with, this fox treated him like a mouse. Dial had been torn about this fox. Its magic and power terrified him. However; Dial tended to ignore its superiority complex just because it was so annoying. He seemed to take comfort just talking to it like a mortal fox because it seemed to annoy it back that he would not worship its ego. It probably provoked some bad behavior but it had been gentle enough so far so he was not too worried and felt safe enough around it when it chose to be a pain. Sometimes because of its natural appearance he forgot it was a spirit at all and was tempted to treat it like a coyote would treat an annoying fox.
“Hmm maybe I could transform you into a human some time just to see what would happen.”
“Wait…doesn’t do that!”
“Relax… just a joke… I can’t do that silly. Though I can do a few things”
The Fox smirked and then sat lazy and picked at its teeth with its claw like food was stuck in there. Dial hated him for that joke; it was cruel to threaten his livelihood that way. Though he really did not know if he had that power or not. Nothing was certain with this fox. It was mentally exhausting just to be around him. However the fox’s magic could not be ignored. Dial felt weak next to him. He knew the he was being toyed with by a bored predator. He feared the day he lacked to be amusing to it because it may find him only entertaining to eat. Yet the fox was a good actor and loved to distract him or confuse him by acting good to him. It seemed to also show off to him by shifting its size, shape, and god knows what else it could do.
“you change me into a human and ill send dogs after you”
The fox glared a bit but he was still smiling. It then looked away with disinterest and ignored him a bit. That is when dial realized something that had sipped by him a moment ago. Why was he afraid of dogs? Dial wondered what could make someone that powerful so afraid. He wanted to know more and thought he could sneak it into the conversation. Maybe he could trick the fox into telling him. Anything that made this one afraid was a tool for self defense.
“Do you know how far away the dogs are fox?”
The fox had been staring at him and had a blank look, the kind of look humans fine eerie because they cannot read it. Hiding its true emotion and thoughts from him and when dial noticed he wondered why it was staring at all.
“What”, dial inquired like he did something bad.
“Oh nothing, now enough about dogs little one”
“…but you said before that you can’t kill dogs?”
The fox looked at the coyote with a cold stare. As if it had been distracted for a moment but centered its attention fully on him and now it made him feel threatened again. Annoyed he did not obey him, Dial thought.
“What? I don’t think I could kill a dog either you know, though I would not want to. I am just worried that if the dogs return you won’t be able to protect me and I’ll die...”
Dial was talking out of thin air and trying to hide his true intention. He could tell by reading his prior behavior that the fox truly was afraid of dogs. Fear was the hardest thing to act sincere about if you were lying. The fox was genuine in its fear of dogs. So what about dogs made it fearful though? Was he truly unable to kill them or were they to dangerous for him to try and kill? Or maybe he could not kill anything living at all? Or wait... maybe... dogs were a weakness of the fox!? He wanted to know what the foxes weakness was for his own protection and thought he could trick the fox into revealing his weakness if he had any.
“Why do you fear dogs? I assumed the dead would not be at risk to the living. Clearly you said you hunt them after they die so why can’t you hunt them now? Can spirits not kill living things?”
The fox stared at him like he it was pissed off with him. Dial had perhaps been a bit to direct. That was an interesting however. If the fox had a fear or weakness maybe it could die? There was the possibility that Fox could very well kill living things; and he was a threat to Dial after all. However; if dogs could kill the fox somehow…could a spirit die again? Was there death for the dead, or simply a way to destroy a spirit? They did seem rather powerful and tricky. Anything that could destroy a spirit it may be worth fearing himself, but dogs were always a threat to him? Maybe the answer was something more supernatural. Dial could not see why a spirit would fear anything mortal. Other spirits he could fathom but a simple dog?
“Shut up pup, I do not fear dogs.”
“That’s not what it looks like. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, I fear dogs too.”
“Do not tempt me coyote, your head looks rather easy to bite right now” the fox barked pissed off.
He seemed genially angry; dial knew he struck a nerve and perhaps went too far in prodding him. Was Dial close to secret weakness he was protecting? Dial tried to find a reason until ultimately it was something the fox had suggested to him accidentally. Bitey he thought; dogs bite things. Maybe a dog’s bite can harm him somehow? Maybe even a single bite would be like poison to him or destroy him instantly in a puff of smoke. Had he figured out the fox’s weakness? It would make some sense why the fox was fearful enough to keep the hell away from them. Or maybe he was over thinking it. Maybe a dog just killed him and so he hates them. Maybe it was something else though Dial had missed? He also indicated he may not be able to not kill them? Maybe spirits cannot kill the living? Though there could be another reason for it. He did not know if it was a bite, but something unnerved the fox about dogs. Was not worth the risk; getting close enough to a dog to kill it.
“Growl”, the fox raised its hackles lightly.
The fox looked ready to attack him which snapped him back to full alert. He was quick to submit even though he was buried in mud. So he just dropped his head low to the surface and flattened his ears cowardly.
“I am sorry; I really do not care about your private business. I was just curious and making an observation. Clearly I was wrong. You can share with me if you like. Please do not bite me.”
The fox suddenly relaxed and smiled a little and washed the look of anger off his face. To be so angry then switch so sudden to was a bit unnerving. Maybe he figured out that Dial had been reading its emotions to gauge if it was telling the truth or to figure it out how when he was serious. If the fox had deflected its emotions elsewhere, Dial would not be able to read him. Maybe it could see right through him, and knew Dial was up to something too.
“For a moment there you had provoked some rage in me; disrespectful one… but if you are sorry, I will forget your offense. The reason I dislike dogs is that they are what killed me long ago. It has never set well with me since.”
Dial sat and thought for a moment… that was one of the answers he had guessed. Though something felt weird, no… that could not be it entirely could it? Fox did not explain why he wanted to kill dogs and why he did not kill dogs. Had the fox just baited him to lead him off trail? Dial felt he was onto something wasn’t he? So dogs killed the fox and he fears dogs now. What if…what kills you, is your weakness in death? Dial shuttered to imagine being torn apart to death by dogs. So maybe the fox was being sincere, or maybe he was trying to hide his weakness. Could a dog bite kill the fox? Humans meant dogs, so that’s probably why he disliked humans as well. If this was true, coyote bites were harmless or he would have not risk being bitten. Still though he could not help but have little theories of his own. If he somehow befriended a dog maybe the fox would stop pestering him. But Dial thought this next to impossible. Most dogs would try and kill him unless maybe he raised him himself or they were smart enough like him to reason with.
“Scratching is a good way to get your paw bit off.”
Suddenly the fox started growling at him fiercely ready to attack him and ready to pounce, which got his full attention.
“Wait what? No. Don’t hurt me!”
The fox suddenly leaped over to Dial with alarming supernatural speed. In a fire like blur that sudenly dove under the mud as if it was air. No splash, no sound. Then suddenly Dial felt teeth around his hurt paw which he had been lightly standing on under the mud. Dial yipped in shock and pain.
“YIPE!”
The fox emerged lifting his paw up above the mud but there was no mud or water at all on the fox. He was able to pass through it completely unsoiled, yet hold a paw in his jaws solidly.
“Hush!… I told you to keep your yappy voice down. I was just teasing you baby.”
“It hurts”
Dial looked and realized the fox was just holding his paw gently in his mouth and had not bit him at all...yet. Oddly he could feel the teeth yet the rest of the fox was in the mud but clean of it. His paw throbbed with pain from being moved like that.
“You hurt me”
“No I didn’t. Here let me see it baby.
The fox whipped the mud off his arm completely with one brush of its paw down his arm. Then it continued until all the mud was gone magically. He then shifted his form into the spirit fox which startled Dial for a moment. Those glowing eyes and mouth were nightmarish.
“Oh a sprain, I see. How you do this? …Not important. Let me heal you”
“Um ok…”, dial agreed.
The fox then gently rubbed his spirit paws over and under Dials arm and paw. It closed its eyes and mouth and concentrated and soon a yellow glow appeared between his paws.
“Wow”
Dial wanted to call him a show off, for using magic so trivially. Dial felt a moment of jealousy as the fox made magic look so ordinary and easy. He then realized he must also have some magic himself, how else could he be so smart? He thought Tony may have magic too as it is not normal to hear animal speak? Though dial still thought his bite may have done that to him, and worried it may have some other effects. Then again both could be true. Though Tony seemed not much worse off after his new gift appeared, and it had been critical in Dials social development. Dial then wondered if his ability to understand most human dialogue had been gained through the bite too. He seemed even to be learning to read and write things he had never been shown by Rosie which made no sense. Was he just getting smarter or was knowledge being shared with Tony? There were too many theories, but no proof. That bite certainly had something to do with it.
“Stop moving”
Dial then realized he had also bit the fox… hmm. Suddenly he worried the fox may have some link with him also. But maybe the bites were harmless and tony simply had separate power? There was the remote chance the fox had something to do with all of it. However; it was a coyote nature to be suspicious of everything, so Dial tried not to judge him too unfairly. He was actually healing his paw so it was very kind and he had not seen this side of the fox yet. He did have some sneakiness about him but he also had shown some compassion.
“Easy, don’t fidget, relax and let me work the magic.”
Learning about the existence of magic and spirits had taught Dial to think outside the ordinary, to places even human beings would not believe. He had only just begun to learn about humans and now spirits as well. His world was now a hundred times bigger and all he had chosen to live a quiet life on the ranch. He was only two years old and somewhat wished he could have had more time to just learn about being a coyote. Then he was rescued into humanity and found fondness and curiosity and family there he never could have known or appreciated with a simple mind. Though he was very grateful for his new intelligence, he still could remember life before his increased awareness. When he got home he may need to share this with Tony and perhaps suggest a small cage is too small for his big mind; a jail even. Tony should understand… but he knew he would have to wail until after these new people came and left and the others knew his secret. In time the Ranch boundaries would be his new pen but that was already room enough for him and a family of coyotes to reside from what little he had seen already.
“Fox, can you teach me how to heal like you do. It would be a harmless but very handy skill to have and I could heal Tony? I feel really bad for getting him hurt”
“Don’t ask me such things silly one…now do you want me to finish healing or not?”
“Yes sir”, dial relaxed.
Fox seemed amazing to him. Though even humans looked almost magical, even after his intelligence gift they had a lot of strangeness yet to learn. Maybe he was getting some brains from Tony but the more he learned the more he felt he knew nothing about humans. If it were only temporary he may actually want to try being one for awhile. Learn through their eyes. Maybe he could even somehow turn Tony into a temporary coyote so he could do the same. He found the fantasy amusing but then…he was beyond such power and would not want to be unfair if he ever had it. All he knew is he was a simple coyote until…hmm… maybe it was that sickness he had come here with? Did that give him a new brain? Did he transmit it to tony with a bite? It had not occurred to him there was a scientific answer. He only knew about science due to the Doctor. Even then it just seemed like another form of magic though he knew it was not. Even a gun seemed like magic to him and he feared those a lot. Magic was downright terrifying but now the fox was using it to aid him. He would have not expected this from the fox. Maybe he was an ally after all? But he may still be trying to manipulate him into false trust. Though this was buying some trust for sure. If he was truly this kind and sincere under the rough surface he would be a good friend to have. Even if fox would not teach Dial magic, he could offer a lot of good at the ranch healing sick animals. Then again… the fact he seemed to hoard his magic a bit too much made dial worry.
“Not quite done”
Fox spoke hiding a bit of a sneer like it annoyed or was taxing for him to accomplish. When he saw Dial had noticed he was quick to grin into a smile and look impressive.
“I am sorry for the trouble fox. You were so kind to offer. Oh that does feel much better now… thank you Fox. I did not feel pain well it in the mud because it is so cold. I guess it was soothing the pain, or maybe I am getting a bit numb from the cold.”
“I told you I am not quite done. You need to relax and let me heal. If you do not relax it will not heal proper. Healing is easy for me; it is just not the exact type of healing I am used to doing so it takes time and concentration. Nothing for you to worry just not something I do often but fear not your paw good in good hands.”
Dial noted that the fox had helped him get one his arm up above the mud. Maybe he could get out now, though to do so he would need to plunge that paw right back down again and may just get stuck all over. He was hesitant to try but too distracted by the foxes power to think about freedom for a moment.
“I can heal this today but do not expect it again from me as I am not a healer. It is tricky for me to pull off correctly”
“Not a healer? Oh that disappoints me a bit; I had imagined some great things of you a moment ago. Honestly maybe you are just misunderstood. I bet if you did more good you would have lots of friends who would adore you for your amazing healing”
Dial felt maybe this fox could find a home at the ranch to if it so wanted, he doubted it but almost offered…but it was not for him to offer. He had not settled in there perfectly himself yet. Besides the fox seemed to come and go as it pleased but Dial was certain he would be welcome so long as he did not act cruel or play tricks.
“Gosh you are so sentimental…”
“No no…sorry… there is no need to get offended by that. It is just a compliment and thank you for your hard work. Thank you very much Fox.”
The fox managed a small smile which was a bit scary in his currents shadow form, seeing how his mouth glowed.
“I can see you are not a monster even if you look a bit scary in this shadow form of yours. So long as you don’t try to scare or threaten me with that face I actually find it kind of cute and cool looking. You have a heart after all, it was wrong of me to judge you on looks, even if it is easy to be scared by new strange things. Then again all coyotes tend to be this way. I think…coyote are said to be clever…but it must be because we are so cautious. I tend to think we are just good at assessing and avoiding trouble but then our curious nature can get us right back into it. I always wondered what it was like for foxes and wolves but I never had a conversation with one before.”
“I haven’t been a fox for a very long time… I am very old but my mind is sharp and fresh and not burdened by old age.”
“Are all spirits like this?”
“The living should not know so much about the dead you know… it sucks the joy and mystery out of living. Just worry about this stuff when you die.”
"well i hope to live a long and happy life"
"You know, I think you are trusting me more and I appreciate it, makes me like you more too now. Don’t get to comfortable about it though, just stating I like you better when you aren’t so moody. I guess even I can be a bit chaotic by nature but it comes with being a spirit."
“What do spirits do for fun? Or to relax? Do spirits have… um… jobs? Like you heal… but you do not seem to like doing it much. Are there spirits that go around healing” I sort of pictured you for a moment as a traveling sage of some sort….oh I am sorry I just asked you a ton of questions…ok I will stop being so curious about stuff I don’t understand. Hard as it is for a coyote”
Dial smiled friendly. The healing sure was taking longer than he imagined it would. A thought had crossed his mind but he tried to ignore it completely. There was just a small chance this was some sort of magic trick…but he doubted it because it felt right. Whatever fox was doing felt warm and kind and like healing.
“HA!” the fox ignored the question but something about it amused him…that was good at least. Dial thought maybe it was silly to him, but it made him laugh. The fox was concentrating and dial was waiting patiently his mind drifted again to the dogs. Fox had just shouted out a laugh a minute ago. He worried they may still be close as they smelt them not to far away.
“Hey…I just noticed your volume…wont you also alert the dogs to us? You laugh louder than I Yip”
“Oh do not worry only magic folk can hear and see spirits. I thought you already discovered that yourself?”
The fox smirked like he had a slip of the tongue, or maybe he had been teasing Dial and wanted to provoke his imagination a little. Dial did not know which it was. His first impression had been just to think about how Tony could hear him but his mind went to the other interesting part. Dogs should not have magic and thus could not see and hear him. Again the topic popped into his mind and confused him again. Clearly the fox could be standing right next to a dog and be in no danger. So even if he could be bit and die, he never would be bit. Maybe he was telling truth and it was a bad memory from his death. But he also said he would kill dogs if he could? Or is that what he said? He may just did not want to kill them but that’s not what it sounded like. Dial realized the dogs either had protection from death by fox, or something about the dogs could kill him and it may not be their bite. The riddle festered again in his mind until pain suddenly replaced it.
“OUCH” Dial whined but tried to keep his voice down. “That hurt”
He had not noticed yet that since the fox came up from the mud clean and dry; it had been standing on top of the water as if it was weightless.
“How do you do that… the floating?”
“I suppose you want to know all my secrets don’t you pup…”
“No…just you are amazingly talented. Explaining things to me does not mean I can do them for myself silly. I would not tell others if you did not wish me to and I can’t steal your power. It just satisfies my curiosity, you have to remember I was just gifted this bigger brain recently and it thirsts for knowledge. That with a coyotes obsession for figuring stuff out. Though I suppose you already deduced that as you are brilliant yourself. It would seem you delight in being a tease and want to remain entirely mysterious, enigmatic, and magnanimous. Don’t you.”
Dial then leaned into fox who looked a bit surprised. Then Dial started to lick at foxes face a bit. Fox smiled then continued with his healing. Which Dial managed to smile as well, even though he was still freezing and stuck in mud?
“If you keep fidgeting you will not heal up right and if you keep breaking my concentration I may accidentally poison you instead of heal. This is a delicate process so just relax. Clear your mind, it will help with the healing. Just relax I am not going to hurt you unless you actually provoke or deserve it”
Dial gave him a weird face because he just had hurt him. The fox grinned.
“Intentionally… I meant I am not going to hurt you intentionally.”
Dial waited a few minutes and tried to be a good patient. His thoughts started to dwell again on random questions he desperately wanted to know but he had deduced the fox did not want to tell him much anything. He would have to just accept it as magic and not try to figure all the answers. It was a bit weird as fox was almost acting like he expected Dee to if she was able to talk. Rose had been very attentive, Tony a good friendly brother and teacher so far, but Dee was clearly the most heart filled and affectionate. She had toughness about her and could have a temper, but she was so gentle. He wished she was a coyote so they could be mates. Wait…where did that thought stir from. Could it be possible he had fallen in love? No… can’t be… she was a human and could never love him like that. He would just have to settle with being close to her heart as possible.
“Oh Dianna… I hope I can get back before she returns… I don’t want them to worry about me…”
“Ah good you are relaxing finally… this will speed it up. Just keep thinking those mushy happy thoughts… who am I to say what’s weird, I rebel in being weird and strange after all.
“Hmm I had not thought of you that way before. You know there really is nothing wrong with that. I do wish you did not posture or bully me and if I warm up completely to you i am sure you will not scare me. do not take that as an insult though…
“No I understand… I have not been alive for awhile but I recall the animal mind. Though you are rather unique as you have that added thought power. Maybe I am a bit jealous as I wish I could have been smarter when I was just a fox.”
“Oh um… thank you…”
“Spirits tend to be…complicated. For humans it tends to change them from who they once were. Though they are like that in life as well. For animals it is an awakening as we are no longer held back from the limits of our limited brain power when alive. Though that again is why you are unique. Have you tried biting other animals yet? Maybe you can share your gift with them?”
“Oh um… no… and I don’t think that is a good idea…”
The fox grinned a bit. And then Dial finally ran out of thoughts and just sat there missing Dee. She hardly knew him at all yet but he imagined her holding him in her arms. Oddly even tony he did not mind being close with. Though, it would be the same sort of thing incompatibility issue of species. I guess if you can’t mate with a human there’s no reason to favor one sex or the other. I guess that opened up Tony to intimate thoughts.
He looked over at the fox who was grinning its mouth off.
“What?
“Nothing…te he he”
“Fine…keep your secrets…sneaky”
The fox just smirked.
“Huff”
Dial exhaled as though he was being teased, then tried to relax. He noticed as the fox healed him he felt warm. He had not noticed before. Dial was exhausted at the same time as the healing had felt so relaxing. So much stress today that was not as easily leaving his body as the pain was.
“What’s wrong now? Gee you sure complain a lot for a coyote. Thought coyotes were super bouncy and never let anything get them down. Though at least that’s what the human stories say.”
“Uh…”
“Never mind; go ask your human pet some time. Anyhow I am almost done here I think. How does it feel now?”
Dial stretched his paw and rotated his wrist a bit and it felt just fine, a little sore but barley at all.
“Wow this is great. Thank you very much fox. That was very kind of you and I will remember it.”
“Now don’t get any ideas…I am not your medic.”
“No I didn’t mean to use your healing; I meant I will think fondly of you for healing me. I feel guilty but I’ve been a bit on the fence about you and maybe you are not such a bad guy after all”
The fox grinned in a friendly sort of way and nibbled playfully on his ear.
“What do I call you anyway; you may know me as Dial? It is a name the human chose but I like it, as I had no name before. They are kind so I feel it an honor to be given a name.”
“Best you just call me fox for now. Maybe if we become friends you will learn it”
“We are not friends?”
“Gosh no, you are not my equal. Whatever made you think that stinky coyote”
Dials ears folded back a bit timidly and a bit disappointed but he knew it to be true. Just cause someone seems impressive or even can be kind to you does not make them a friend no matter how much you want them to accept you. It seems he was not good enough in the fox’s eyes and for a brief while he hoped he had found a new friend. Somewhere inside he felt hurt and there was a bit of anger that came out from somewhere deep. It was like it was screaming at him. As though it was upset Dial had been tricked. No… was it angry because he had let his guard down?”
“Hey now… you don’t been to be unfair”
“Unfair… Wow you are such an ungrateful pup”
“God you sure change like the wind don’t you. Is that intentional or on purpose.”
The fox looked cross.
“Oh I am sorry… that just came out… I apologize completely; I don’t know why I said that. Weird I guess I can be moody too, I didn’t realize I had an anger issue… Maybe it is the personification in human terms of my animal instincts? When I felt cornered twice I bit and lost control. I need to be careful to control that, I really do not wish to bite people or animals however much you’d be curious about it.”
“Stupid coyote, stop trying to talk to me like I am your equal, it is getting on my nerves…look… healing requires positive energy and there is not a lot in me. It both drains me of my reserves and makes me a bit fouler, so you just have to deal with my bad volatility. Best not piss me off right now or I could bite you and that is something I myself do not wish to do.”
Questions itched at his brain again but he denied every one as he felt that was a very polite way for the fox to say it to him. However it was a very interesting concept. Light and dark; maybe it was in all things, even the negative ones. Maybe negative did not mean evil or bad? Did fox just reveal he was more of a negative one? His mood did turn sharply after all that healing. However; most of the time he was transferring energy to heal they both seemed more positive. Weird…was it truly how they both felt or was the energy making them both feel that way. The only possible analogy he could think of from the life of an ordinary coyote would be trusting and food. An animal could fear you one moment, trust you for being fed then go right back to fearing you. That’s odd, he was thinking of that from a human’s perspective. He had to be connected with Tony… or maybe he was just smart enough to think like a human does just not as a human? Ok so maybe these were his thoughts after all and not Tonys.
Still, it was weird that after the healing he too felt a surge of negativity. Maybe he was giving some of his own positive energy to the fox as part of the healing connection. He thought to a moment ago how he felt darker, angry and he worried. Was it his instincts just playing tricks on him or did he have some negativity inside he had to be cautious of.
Dial remembered the fox was like this at times he observed. He is very chaotic in his behavior, thought, and his emotions. Absorbed compliments like nourishment…maybe to replenish that low positive energy capacity he spoke of. And he acted very negative as though he had an abundance of that. Wait had Dial just figured out for himself the mechanics of spiritual energy? Tony had talked randomly to him, back when he eavesdropped; about such topics. He had many more natural beliefs he said but also said some other cultures had qualities he liked. He talked about something called Yin and Yang Maybe he could ask him that some time. Tonight he just wanted a bath and sleep. Also Dial half recalled the fox saying something about coyote stories he should ask tony to tell him about.
As for the fox, he felt his possible new understanding of spiritual energy may make him easier to relate to. So he was a bit volatile, did not mean he should be ignored or shunned. May make him a bit trouble making but he was a very interesting creature. He wished now he had of taken him up on his offer to go running in the woods earlier. Then again…he had acted nice but would turn around and be an ass and expect to get away with it… it annoyed him but he shrugged it off and felt the fox deserved some praise for the amazing magic and help and general friendliness it has shown so far. Maybe one day he would be the foxes friend but it made him unable to fully trust if he would not open up and consider dial his friend. Even if they were unequal in power, it did not have to stop them from becoming friends. Though Dial sensed maybe the fox was so used to being the most powerful so he never lowered himself. Maybe he should just pretend to stroke his ego as he was more agreeable that way. May even help feed some positive energy his way?
“Your scratching has given me a headache pup...” fox started to growl at him again.
“Scratching?” Dial thought. He had said that before. What on earth did he mean by scratching? Maybe he meant bothering him somehow?
Why was the fox mad again? He had done nothing, was he just venting on him for no reason?
“I am sorry I guess I just get confused with how to address you some times. I just expect you to act like a human, which I guess does not make much sense. Even expect you to act like a fox. I have no idea what a spirit acts like as you are the first one and you seem very chaotic and hard to read at all. So I tend to turn my judgment to the only part of you I know how to read. The fox, but every time I react to you as a normal fox I am reminded you are not a normal fox. I hope you can understand my point of view.”
The fox the smiled and hopped up onto his head and giggled. Was he playing? Pretending? Maybe he was not growling but trying to confuse him for a laugh…odd. But ok… so now there was a fox on his head…perfect…
“Ah I see now. Good vantage point and perfect cure for my headache.”
Dial grumped and backed his ears but tried to tolerate this...
“Hey... cut it out. Please don’t tease me. I do not like it…”
The fox chirred happy
“Wait…you hardly weigh a thing? You feel as light as a rat on my head…”
Dial’s mind filled with a million questions about the Fox…yet again. Soon his mind went through everything he knew so far. From his first meeting with the fox, his own mysterious powers, Tony who may also have power? The weird bites and possibility he was connected with the Fox and tony. His mind swirled back to the dogs again and that’s when he felt the Fox using its claws on his forehead lightly”
“Eek!” he shook his head instinctively and the fox leaped off”
“Why you do that?”
“I don’t know…I was bored of you. You don’t even know your name”
“Yes I do, my name is Dial?”
No I know who you are and I’m not telling. Only if you guess my name first.
“Um… you haven’t told me your name?”
“Yes I have you just were not listening”
“Um… your name is… fox?”
“Correct!”
The fox danced around playfully and Dial was confused as they both were animals but had been so intelligent and now the fox was acting…. Well… like a fox.
“Fox of legend, fox of story, fox of brave, and fox of glory”, he rhymed.
“Um… ok…”
Dial looked at him like he would a hyper pup or a crazy human. Dial did not know what to think… what started to creep into his mind was a fear this spirit who had proven itself to be insanely power and quick to anger was in fact crazy… maybe it really was toying with him like a mouse?
“Please fox do not hurt me ok... I just…”
Fox rushed up and covered his mouth.
“Hush little coyote who does not know it is a coyote”
Fox made him flinch but soon he felt he meant no harm. Dial sat and stared at him, how could he forget that he was a coyote? He sat there and thought to himself and pondered the animal it had once been. In many ways he had things in common with fox for, he once he was but a simple minded animal too. He then felt fox playful and perhaps he should play with him?
“Fox… who is fox… “Will you tell me my name?
“Well that is easy but do you know what you are?”
“Well I am a coyote?”
“No that is who you are”
“No my name is…”
Dial finally started to get the game, or at least he thought he did. He played along.
“Yes… my name is coyote.”
“Fox is proud to be your friend, but lie to him, your life will end”, he rhymed again.
Dial waited and was unsure if he knew how to rhyme.
“Spirit animal or man, can fox truly tell, just what I am”, dial rhymed and was impressed he pulled it off.
“Ah now you see just how to play, you may just live, another day”.
“So what am I then you silly fox, reveal what hides, within my box”, Dial felt those words were stupid but the fox stared at him wide eyed…
“Ah... you finally know who you are... now tell me.” Fox said and stared at him.
“I am coyote with a plan, to……….?”
Dial was about to finish speaking he covered his paws to his mouth in fear as it was as if he was being hypnotized or controlled. Was fox casting a spell? The fox suddenly became filled with frustration.
“NO NO NO! THAT’S NOT HOW YOU PLAY!”
The fox snarled and huffed and swatted at the mud in frustration. Dials ears folded back in terror. He was so confused… what was going on. It was like an entirely different and new entity had completely taken over the Fox he knew. He recalled while fox had healed they most likely had some sort of positive bond which stabilized his personality for awhile. Had something destabilized it or was this something magical or mystical occurring. It was a spirit fox so anything seemed possible. He still had no idea if it was good or evil or what it had planned for him. It seemed to be playing but had a moment ago threatened his life in a rhyme of all things. Something told him he could not reason so easily with this fox… it was a raw animal side… oh no… had that positive energy run dry… what was keeping him stable had that disappeared?
“Scratch scratch scratch” stop that or you will make me kill you.”
Dial cowered his ears back in fear...the fox just threatened to kill him!
“What is wrong with you stupid coyote… you are broken... Let me inside… let me look... what is your plan… are you coyote are or you not coyote. Do you bring destruction or healing? Do you bring death or life? what are you…”
“Uh… is coyote a name or a species? I am …a coyote… I don’t know of anyone named coyote. You know my name is Dial. And I assure you I am a good fellow and don’t want to harm anyone.”
In the back of his mind Dial recalled the wind once saying that he walked with death. If it was not the fox who walked with death, was it himself or someone else? Though the fox was too distracting and he could not hold onto the thought very long. The wind simply said death... or he brings death? Dam dial wished he could remember the exact words. Either dial had something to do with death, was about to die or the fox would kill him if he remained around it. Or maybe...possibly the wind was trying to kill the fox and hinting Dial would be the one to bring him death?
“What is it you are scratching now...pesky coyote...Come… let me scratch at you... give me a peek. You tease... I can tell you are keeping me out... what are you hiding... I do not trust you… may need to kill you to be safe.”
Dial did not know what to do, he felt completely powerless as any action or comment may just be a quicker doom. Was he about to get sliced apart? He closed his eyes terrified and expected the fox to slice him any moment. Then when nothing happened he opened his eyes and the fox had disappeared. Just when he thought he was safe he started to feel little pointy claws poking at his belly hidden under the mud. The fox had gone under again just like before. He then felt little pointy claws on his soft vulnerable belly flesh
“YIP”
He squirmed
“the fox popped up out of the mud and smiled at him like it had all just been a prank”
“ you stupid bastard are you trying to scare me to death!”
The fox just sat there and started licking at its fur like a cat and this made Dial furious. It was mocking him again. After everything he had put up with he thought it had purpose. Now he was trying to annoy him by acting like a newborn pup and he already claimed to be much older and wiser to not be such a pest… gah! Dial did not know what to say and could not choose a reply that seemed best. The fox confused him speechless with what it did next. The fox started to sing!
“Coyote the trickster, coyote the fool, watch out or he’ll come after you. Hated and loved by all he meets, watch your dinner closely, or he will steal your meats. Shifty and loathsome, he tricks and lies, his curiosity is how he died”,
The fox sang with utter glee and spite, playful with an inductive undertone.
Dial just stood there blank faced, part of him was amused but he was to confused to know what to say…ultimately the only thing that eventually came to mind was simple stament.
“Um… so I guess I am not the first coyote you have met then…”
Dial had no idea who he was singing about but it surely was not him because he was not dead he was very much alive.
“Um… so I guess I am not the first coyote you have met then…”
Dial had no idea who he was singing about but it surely was not him because he was not dead he was very much alive.

any time ^^. this was sort of a writers practice project that took a life of its own. plan to see how far i can take it and got some neat ideas. it is a rough posting process though so some chapters will be a bit more polished than others. passable but not perfect. works in progress i plan to use for editing practice later.
i will be writing to a pause point and soon witching to my main project ( which i can upload here but will be on fa after new years on another account ( professional project)

then again XD....
coyote in my mind is quite young. only 2 years old so he kind of would sound like a young adult or teenager and i guess both those guys are way to old.
fox would sound young too.
maybe.... Chris evens? who knows. xD its fun to imagine such things. but in truth no one really fits
fox will be calm one moment which can make him look mature but also equally like a devil in a suit creepy and calm like he could turn on you if you got on his bad side. then he can act a bit playful and energetic or even crazy not quite joker crazy just random. unpredictable and when you seem confused or even mad at him for his eccentric you realize he is just acting for attention. he wants negative attention. ( look up heyoka) and you will get an idea... mischief spirit.
coyote i kind of insert my own internal monologue in. i have sort of two sides to my personality irl. what i can not decide is if it represents fox and coyote, or coyotes gentle more child like timid animal side, or his more serious mature intelligent calm or serious side. defiantly when he is angry the latter comes out . but he can have moments of energy as well as coyotes are known to have.
think of coyote like a man child. in his late twenties but still acting a bit energetic at times. then he will turn around and try to be mature and serious or even bark his throaty and maturity if it is questioned. ( this is a lot of how i felt in my 20's and ill be 30 in a month so.. i am much more calm and chilled these days. fox is... complicated and that is why he is so fun to write. you just can not tell who the real fox is.

~smirk~ honestly besides some plot points id like to guide myself to. it is written on the spot. this chapter was actually (1-4 major scene) which started off as one.. when i needed to break up the flow properly it became three. then the fox and coyote dialogue became so vital for what i was trying to get across that i spent an entire week rewriting it until i was satisfied i got what i wanted. the end it is a bit weird but there's a method to the mad-fox-ness
though i don't write porn but may elude to relationships or awkward moments. at the end of the day it is a story about finding a place to belong to. a coming of age story, and a bit of a horror story thrown in for suspense. Hope you like what i have planned but it will be a few more chapters ahead before Tony is getting up to some weird plots.
one of my favorite graphic novels i bought awhile ago ( surprisingly not through being a fur ) is called beasts of burden. loved it so much i am thinking of making one of my future professional novel sub-titles a similar name. Think "Buffy the vampire slayer" with talking animals similar to my story here.
