Although I'm totally biased, you might give a couple of these games a try sometime, they're really well-made. There's a Mega Man compilation game disc, and a Mega Man X compilation game disc, both for the Playstation. Each of them has all the old games of the original and X series on it, respectively.
If I had to choose only a couple games I would pick the first Mega Man X, and Mega Man 2 or 3 from the classic series. Those are excellent. Mega Man X in particular I think is a good one for a new person to start from. It's not too tough and once you've adjusted to the controls it's so fun.
