Xanadu is a setting I helped create, in that I brainstormed the rules with the Bryan Derksen, who ultimately wrote the introductory story. Generally speaking, Kubla Con is a SF/F convention held each year the weekend after Halloween, and "Xanadu" is the main theater and presentation area. Wearing costumes at Kubla Con is a big part of the fun, even more than usual at these things, and since it takes place so close to Halloween people tend to have something to wear. And one year, due to a mysterious, magical mask, everyone turned into whatever they were wearing. (You can go to http://shifti.org/wiki/Xanadu_%28se.....#Setting_Rules for the complete rules, if you want to try writing a story there, yourself.)
This was a story commission, from someone who wishes to remain anonymous. One of the things he especially wanted wanted in this story was the full five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. That was a challenge, but I had fun with it. It was also challenging to figure out a way to include a SLOW change in the Xanadu setting, in which the transformations are pretty much instantaneous.
Comments/critiques welcome.
