Those who know me well will know that I am in a great adore to the timeless story of peter Pan, not because of that pants-wearing child, but because of Hook and all that pirates. I like to collect nice illustrated versions of the book in all languages. Best have been and are the English ones, by the way.
I often wondered which style, which way people here on FA like most...I know, it's no porn, but I really would like to know...Which of this pictures do you like most? And why?
Left above:
Arthur Rackham. The first, the very first illustrated book. Hook was designed here after the direct stage model, Gerald de Maurier, the first Hook, whom was written the role personally by Barrie. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_du_Maurier ) The style is kinda rough, but the dirty look of the pirates is the closest one to the original.
Middle above:
Art Nouveau style by Alice b. Woodward in the 1920ies. Here, like in many early versions, hook owns an iron double hook, a claw. No beard, also the coat is not red (which was first done by Disney). Very dynamic style, Woodward plays with colours and the light.
Right above: Anne Grahame Johnstone. The version I grew up with.
Hook wears correct to the book a Charles II coat and collar, and natural hair. The huge boots are quite unusual, but with the fairy-like ruching it compounds the fantastic mood of Anne's style. Her other characters are great as well.
Left below: Eric Kincaid. Many similarities to Johnstone may proof that he was somehow a pupil of art under her, and his illustration is indeed 20 years younger. But the huge hat, the traditional red coat, the pompous ornaments create a bigger, huger looking Hook. His face is completely equal to the one of Mr. Darling in the same book. Kincaid draws LOTS of detail, hundreds of hidden fairies and faces. As a matter of fact, this is the only version in which Hook seems to be a strong, buff man.
Right below: Ralph Cleaver. Another early artist, who also gave Hook an iron claw. His Hook is created after the actor Cyril Ritchard ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_Ritchard ). Cyril accented the funny side of the pirates, with lots of singing and dancing. He was very lean and always let his hair grew long for the role. Even when he turned grey, he kept it this way.
