I imagine these little guys roaming the earth programmed to protect this precious life in case something bad were to happen, they would just end up in a new part of the world and they would deem it safe to begin planting. Or maybe they were sent to another planet to start terraforming and all they would need to do is fall over and shatter. I can see someone coming up with a little "Short Film" about it already, kinda in the vein of an apocalypse.
I was thinking of something like that when I first thought these up - little robots programmed to move to optimal light/temperatures, and perhaps some would "groom" themselves and collect certain types of plants.
Your idea takes that to a new level though!! Gosh, I agree, a short film that focuses mainly on the environment (as opposed to the "how will humans survive" focus of most of them) is a really fresh idea, and I love the concept! Man, I'd love to explore this more.

They could work more off of your idea where they could be a form of scavengers. Although, doesn't that shoot down the terrarium aspect? Now i'm kinda seeing it like Wall-E, lol.
They could do what they were originally supposed to be doing (saving life for optimal living conditions) but, the backstory could be that we made these machines but then...HUMANITY DIED OUT...and...they just have the power technology to continue because they're so simply designed. Maybe you could work in some sort of "nano-machine tech" into how small and simple their whole system works (how its just glass with attached arms). LOL, i'm thinking my idea is too simple and would be difficult to flesh out. Yeah there would be backstory but, in their time, where would that story go? They finally crack open, life starts anew and then...life grows...
They could be transporters, humans are dying out and confined to small bordered off areas of the world, maybe due to some a-bombs is why they're stuck? We see the journey of these little guys making it through some desolate or mutated terrain. I 'unno.

When I was first thinking of them, I saw the some as "originals" with plants to take care of as appointed by scientists or gardeners, but some would escape or be abandoned and would then wither continue to care for their original plants or instead pursue their own tastes and plant in themselves what they wished.
I like how the idea is simple, and I think there's something poetic about them simply preserving the life they hold until an optimal environment is reached. It doesn't have to be about humans at all, but instead focusing on the survival of these plants even though everything else has been destroyed.... I really like that. Having a delicate flower weather a storm that no other living thing could.
