When I grew up (not exaggerating) this is what they looked like. This is what they all looked like. The Muscle Sliver had a mouth and claws... and other slivers like the Winged Sliver added.... wings but for the most part this is it.
I loved them. I was one of the few around here that had a sliver deck... one of my all time favorite creature designs in general continuing to be the Shifting Sliver (seen here) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.....ing_Sliver.jpg
When a few people said that Frank, seen here, http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12018754/ , looked like a Sliver I was surprised. I don't see it but it got me thinking, Did they update their design for slivers? Well... a quick google later and yeah - they did. All I have to say is.... wow. Not sure what those are... but they aren't Slivers. At first I was glad that they were evolving away from the basic form which I thought would lead to more interesting results... but that wasn't the case. They're simply different creatures - they aren't slivers any more. They don't look the same and they don't even work the same.
And to that I say... Rest in peace Slivers! Drew this when I accidently called Slither "Sliver" in two instances in the last upload (had slivers on the mind!). It's not a complex design... but these hivemind beasties were an iconic one for me. And they dead now~

Forgetting the fact that Slivers are older than Starcraft this is just my broad generalization of Sliver traits.
They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Some are made of flesh, some stone, some goo, some smoke, and etc.... and although there are many variations at least they followed a certain theme.
You can see a few here for comparison.

Oh the memories of my deck.. Still hold the record for the most damage done in a single attack at my old highschool. I got to a position where my foe just could not break my line, and jut used a queen to keep pumping them out, then just before we decked our self's attacked...
We deiced the next 125 times we payed I just auto won.

There are elves with hooves and horns on Lorwyn that look more like satyrs.
Goblins that are hairy little rodent things live on Alara in Jund. There are also goblins that look nothing alike with horns, scales, and other weird chimeric proportions on Lorwyn as well. On Mirrodin, they've turned into something that looks like a bulldog with non-proportionate jaw and a barrel shaped body. On Kamigawa, the Akki goblins are like beetle looking things with carapace and needle noses.
And we've got vampires that aren't undead running around on Zendikar looking more like the Predator, as well as the classic pale ones on Innistrad.
And also, Phyrexians didn't used to come in all colors. They were straight up black or colorless.
Suddenly, the Slivers gets their turn to look a little different and everyone is up in arms.
Now after saying all of this, I loved my old sliver deck and the designs of the creatures in it. But I've got no problem with not sharing their powers and buffs with my opponent or the pictures on the new cards. Change comes with the territory of playing Magic.
Yes, they evolved the ones on Dominaria into the new ones(They're Slivers, they evolve and adapt). But they did originally come from somewhere else.
TLDR version - Creature designs change from set to set, but they also change back from time to time. They might cycle back into relevancy in the form we originally met them in.

There are explanations to why things are the way they are. The creature design was out of space, they couldn't really come up with designs for the old template they hadn't already used. This is explained in the game world through the new Slivers being the original, native species and the worm-y slivers being taken from Shandalar long ago and living on Rath, then Dominaria. The Shandalar Slivers also evolved over time to mimic the creatures they live around, while Rathian Slivers kept to themselves for a very long time.
The explanation for the mechanical differences is that the game no longer supports creature lords affecting both sides of the field, it's not something they do in Standard sets anymore. This can be explained flavourfully through the fact that Slivers are getting more intelligent, and perhaps are forming separate hives, as they have their own language of clicks and hisses, and are more about individual community.
Anyway, that's all I have to say on the matter, great art though, I like the old Sliver design as well.

I heard they were going to make them a new creature type all together and just decided to go with 'sliver' for whatever reason. I haven't talked to anyone that liked the redesign and my buddy owned a game shop at the time of the release XD. Old slivers FTW. (And btw I don't see Frank as a sliver either :/)
Well, I liked on a theory a buddy told me, if you look closely, the new slivers don't look like a single creature, but like a cluster of slivers forming a bigger one, mimicking an humanoid form to confuse their prey, that each individual is a, well, sliver that can be merged with other to form something bigger.
I didn't like the new design a lot either, but I think they wanted to show how slivers were taking new forms of adaptation...
Still a bunch of very powerful creatures, by themselves? Not a threat, get 5 with different effects on the battlefield and see you opponents CRY.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~
Slivers~
Before the Eldrazy came around, these little guys were the world devouring pest nobody could get rid of! I rally don't like the new ones, yeah sure, they learned magic, but it took away their awesome original design and made them look generic. May they be remembered for the true swarm and not the new idiotic thing they became.

Slivers are what got me into Magic in the first place. I still have my Sliver deck (which sends shivers of terror through my friends) that I love, for they are my babies! I was really excited when I heard M14 would have more new Slivers for me...only to be massively disappointed. I agree that they just aren't...the same somehow. I miss the old designs and am so happy to see I'm not alone in this fact. Thank you for this image!
Had a Sliver (Remasuri in german) deck myselfe.. mixed with illusions... i could turn my Slivers into other creature types and then use a spell that granted me control over all creatures of a certain creature types if i had the most of em.. permanently... so in short i was stealing my enemies creatures.
People didnt liked that.

I do agree with you. My very first deck was a silver one (the prebuild on Onslaught) and they were all awesome, both on design and behaviour. M13 just ruined so much Magic in my opinion And what they did to slivers is just inacceptable
Also, did you notice that now, Slivers share their effects with your creatures only, and not with all slivers ? That's way less fun
Whatever, I'm glad to see a real sliver here, with some anatomic description I hope that we may see some more from you

Due to being on the wrong side of a sliver horde.. This became my fave sliver http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/C.....verseid=116748 I keep one in my side deck to this day.
I understand these feels, I cannot stand the changes they made on the Sliver's historical design. They are revolting looking creatures now that look more like cross-breeds of Elementals and Eldrazi spawns rather the little beak-clawed originals that have kept their memorable design since the Time Spiral block. Hell, the new ones are so awkward looking that I cannot even justify adding them to my Sliver collection, it just feels so wrong adding them for the sake of having the creature type "Sliver"...
Annnnd enough of me ranting...this is a beautiful piece showing what a real Sliver is all about. :3
It's a shame that WOTC scrapped it, the Slivers shall be missed.

The sliver hive is supposed to be constantly evolving and adapting to its surroundings. It's been a few hundred years (I think) since we last saw them in the timeline, and that was even in a different plane. What's to stop a hive of constantly-evolving creatures from changing their appearance and adopting a new basic form that mimics the dominant species of their home? Besides, there was only so much creative room for the appearance of slivers. When they started repeating very similar abilities from before like they did in M14, keeping the same design would've made M14 feel like it had way too many reprints. A simple mechanical change to make them affect only your side of the board and a visual change to distinguish the Shandalar slivers from the Dominarian ones made things feel different instead of just a re-do of an older block.
Ahhh slivers... I still have my old sliver deck as well, good to see I wasn't alone! ^..^
A shame that they've more or less done away with them, though I suppose they had to be reinvented eventually, since they kind of had a tool for everything...
Ah well, we know what a sliver REALLY looks and acts like, even if we're told otherwise!

I hate what they did with the new sliver art, they look like predators instead of slivers. Some of them are awesome and should go into my commander deck, but they dont look like slivers, so they are not going in until I get the art altered on them. I was playing slivers when they where still good in Type 2 and Extended, god I am old.. I remember when damage was still on the stack, and interrupts where still a thing!
I agree, actually. I really hate the new sliver designs, and Wizards provided no explanation for them either. There's no story, no production notes, nothing. Apparently, they were just like "We need to make something that looks cool. What do kids like? Robo things with dreadlocks. Done. With time to spare for lunch."
i always loved slivers and i went nuts when one of my friends said they where bring them back, but after i saw the "evolved" slivers i just got depressed, where as i can see the wanting to try to diversify the old from the new a bit after seeing the change i almost can't fully get behind the neo-slivers because of just how different they are now =/
Yearrrrrrrrrrrrrs ago I had a sliver deck back when Queens were the best you could get. So fun to play. Throw in a few dual lands and Coat of Arms and some tutors and it was time for some funnnnnnnnn. :)
An absolutely gorgeous rendition of a classic sliver. Their classic form is so fun to look at...

This. All over. Right now. Everywhere!
You cannot conceive of the disgust I have with the visual changes to the new slivers. Why, they look like offshoots of Predator for crying out loud! No Sliver Queen or Overlord would accept these new rejects into the hivemind. Rest in peace indeed!

I think Slivers had been what originally got me really interested in MtG in the first place, way back when Legions came out and they got their second big appearance. I'm not exactly sure what my preteen mind back then loved about them so much, but I think this pic sums it up quite adequately: they just look so alien and cool, and they're all long and serpentine to boot. I remember getting hooked on them and wanting to learn as much as I possibly could about them; I wanted so much to get some of the cards from their first appearance in Tempest but finding stores that sold cards from that far back was nigh impossible, and I think by now all of the stores I knew of that did either don't anymore or have closed down. I started reading the novelizations of the story just to try and read about their backstory, but it ended up that even though they appeared in the Legions set they weren't mentioned in the book at all, and I still haven't gotten my hands on Scourge. I eventually got a book about the Rath storyline but it proved to be overly disappointing and barely had Slivers in it at all - it didn't even show Karn's encounter with the Sliver Queen.
I haven't touched the series in a long time now, so looking at these new Sliver designs...it actually hurts a little to know that the Slivers have become this. I'll admit the designs on their own aren't too bad, if they had been called anything else I might not have minded them so much, but having them be associated with the Slivers just feels completely wrong. Judging from other comments on this page, I'm guessing the reason is supposed to be something to do with the species evolving to suit a new environment and some such - okay, I can deal with that, having a new design could even help the species branch out a little. But would it have been so hard for them to look even a little like the original designs? It could've even been like anthro slivers, just give them the curved smooth head on a humanoid body. These things don't even have a tail! Again, the appeal of the slivers was how alien they looked, all of that just goes away if you turn them into bland generic mutant humanoids that can be seen in any sci-fi setting.

I have felt the same way about the new set of slivers when they were announced. i was appalled and disgusted. I have a sliver EDH deck that I created a custom box for, using a scratch, and shadder resistant cover to protect my large asthetic foil queen card that emlases the top rivetted down into a cedar cigar box ( keeps out moisture and bugs, living in florida it's a worthwhile precaution). I have been collecting the new sliver cards, and me and my best friend will be modifying the art to reflect thee old slivers. my deck deserves atleast that much respect and homage to what once was. though i understand slivers are forever evolving. for them to evolve in this manner, and say not form some sort of new queen confuses me. humanoid has limitations i dont see how the story can hold up against the sliver design and concept with previous evolutions.
i like your design, i guess i should put up my own sliver art i have been doing for the purpose of playmat design. I would like to point out that just below their fringes on the back of their head, sometimes to the sides but always near the skull are their mutation glands that allow them to obtain the evelutionary genetic, or chemical make up of surrounding slivers. that organ produces chemicals that give off the blue print to their own evolution as well as recieve. and sorry about the verbosity, i happen to be a mtg fan, and more so a sliver fan.
still i did enjoy seeing your sliver design.

So I go browsing on FA and see this and my "KILL IT WITH FIRE!" instinct shot off. XD
About every other MTG player had a sliver deck and I was getting so annoyed with them. We'd get a 4-6 player game and the slivers came out to murder everyone. This finally stopped when a friend built a burn deck he found couldn't get off the ground, I attempted it and discovered it was the -BEST- troll deck because while it almost never won, it was because people were tired of me wiping the board clean.
In other words, when he gave me the deck it went like this "Hey! I will use my Sliver Deck" "Me too!" Me too." "And out comes the burn deck." "....... no slivers?" "No slivers, no burn." XD

Slivers are literally the only reason I really got into Magic the Gathering...well, them and Ink Eyes X3
but yeah! freaking loved the old design growing up, and I still wish I had found a Sliver Queen!
I haven't noticed a difference in their play-style? may I ask what that difference is? =/
But yeah, they kinda look...I dunno, like a generic metal-predator anymore X3 with hulk and houn-modes for green and red respectively :P
So long as we hold slivers in our hearts, and in our decks, they will never really die =3
...just like the infinitely growing swarm itself XD roflmao!

The new slivers were going to be called spleens or something like that, and the designer who made spleens made them share powers. being a newer designer he wasn't aware of slivers.
When the other older designers were player testing the cards they kept calling them Slivers...cause the name started with S and they had the same share power thing.
So when it came time to print, they just decided to call them slivers anyways.
So it wasn't an intentional design choice and hopefully this new design won't stay. Because your sure not the only one who misses the older design.
