It's a Noibat! I told ya I was going to draw one. xD I'm happy with the background, too. I did this all in stream as well. I expected an empty chat, but several people popped in. That was enjoyable. xD Yep, I must stream a lot more often~

For shading I usually choose a dark opposite of the main color used (like opposite of the background colors) and then multiply the layer and bring the opacity down a tidge.
Then with highlights I just choose pure white and have the highlights layer on overlay. If it doesn't show up that well on a certain color, I'll go over it with a lighter version of that color it's on top of.

i think a good idea would be choosing based on atmosphere rather than opposites, if i may comment on that? like if its in a dark cave you would wanna use blues or purples, etc, stuff like that
the same could go for highlights, but you could also pick something thats a complementary color to the shading tone, because i think the white tends to make your work look a bit flat
