An S type? I guess I kind of went for the J based on the lack of a knuckle guard on the left arm. That and I often go for the more complicated answers XD
True that the J-types were no match for Feddie mobile weapons on the level of the RX-78-2, but they were on pretty equal footing with the mass produced Gundam Ground Types. Then again the RX-79[G]s were pretty much RX-79 GMs with improved reactors and Gundam-type heads as a form of psychological warfare. They were fielded on Earth while Amuro and his RX-78-2 were wreaking havoc in space, so anything resembling the Gundam inspired fear in regular Zeon soldiers... And you know all that stuff already, don't you?

I meant to put "saved" in quotations ^_^; But you are absolutely right. Ultimately the entire Operation was a massive failure leading to the loss of the Delaz and Cima Fleets along with several useful prototype weapons (poor Gerbera Tetra... Still, its spiritual successor, the MS-18E... no that got blown up, too. )
Ah, yes, the Neue Ziel. A real pain in the ass in ACE 2 even with the Dendrobium Orchis. Beating him with God Gundam was a lot of fun, but beating anyone with a Sekiha Tenkyoken tends to be.

I thought the operation was a success. They dropped the colony on Earth, showing the Feds that they're still vulnerable. Personally, I thought it was entirely a scheme from the Fed higher ups to enforce their power. My point to this theory was the hiring of Cima and because of the Zeon attack, gave them a 'good' reason to make the Titans, which were basically ruling until the end of Zeta.
But that's just my opinion. And yeah, Neue Ziel is a bastard in any game you play against it. SG Gundam, ACE, SRW. Gato is a cheap bastard.

Stardust did show the Feds that they could still be attacked, but I don't think their method of retaliation was something the Zeon remnants had been expecting, so from that point I believe the operation was a failure. Not because they couldn't perform a colony drop, but because they ended up hurting themselves more than their enemies in the long run.
Your theory definitely has merit. In the end the Feds benefited greatly from the increased tensions and the Titans were able to rise to power. Not only the Feds, but the major arms companies were all commissioned to design newer models, a definite boon. Anaheim was able to play both sides of the field again, so they were pleased with the outcome. In the end the war was dragged out with the two sides at a stalemate. Not what Gato had in mind.
It was a real nasty piece of work, that mobile armor.
