i feel bad boxing my teams, but not so much the glut of dex-numbers.
right now my white game has a box devoted to nothing BUT teams from years gone by. i like imagining they all talk to eachother about adventures they had with me. once i can move them up to Y, i'll get to take them all out again for special training :>

I leave my teams in their games of origin for the most part, just in case I need to go back and raise a baby in an earlier game to get an egg move or something. I really should start migrating them upward. My Diamond, Pearl and Platinum teams haven't seen the light of day in a long time...
i think it's intended to be the player not playing the game for a long period of time, but through the eyes of the pokemon you never know. it could be that the trainer just took her totodile and went on a different adventure, not really caring about her old team. it could be the trainer was injured. i dunno, and the script doesn't make it clear. i think it's better this way though cause it plays on the guilt of us as gamers ahaha
