At this point I just use the friend safari for shinies

It's hard to say as there's no hard facts.

But I personally find I find a shiny in the safari once a day or every other day depending how long I look.

Aside from just increasing your encounter rate ( with arena trap or illuminate) to speed up on how many pokemon you run into there's nothing that I know of.

Since Pokemon diamond/pearl, there is an item in game you can get called the pokeradar, which shows you the locations of wild Pokemon in nearby grass. You can sort of predict which Pokemon are in which patch of grass by how it moves when you use the item. The game keeps track of how many times you get the same Pokemon in a row, once your chain gets really high it dramatically increases the chances of funding a shiny pokemon.

I'd been trying to chain and moltres keeps appearing halfway through and ruining it even though I didn't enter the wrong patch ;w;

Moltress doesnt ruin your chain, though. Just run from it and the chain will keep going.

I got to a forty chain and kept it for a good hour, and I didnt find anything shiny. Unless I am really really unlucky, moltres reset it

If you hear the music, you're good. i had one show as i was chaining Skiddo. let it run away. it doesnt affect chaining

There's a 1/50 chance roughly for a shiny patch to appear after 40 chained. Just keep resetting your radar until one shows. :c May just be badluck.

As far as I know legendary birds break chains. Then again I don't chain much out of fustration lol
