The mountainous region in the middle of Afghanistan has breathtaking views of astonishing, unspoiled beauty. I've only ever been able to see pictures, having never ventured up there myself, but I can understand why Kabul used to be such a popular holiday destination for Westerners, and it give me hope that one day this country will sort itself out.

It won't be the Americans, the Brits, or ISAF that fixes this place, but the Afghans themselves. It's their fight now, and from what I've seen I think they'll be able to do it. There will be a lot more blood in the years to come, but the Afghans are in the best position they've been in for years to turn a war-torn country in to a functioning, secure, unified state.
