New ID time!
This was me rockin' it down to Dug Bar at the Hells Canyon ADV rally this summer. Photo graciously provided by another ADVRider. :3
The Hells Canyon area is in eastern Oregon, near Enterprise and Imnaha. I had a great time!

Yeah, I'm usually one of those "omg nature has to have trees for me to like it" kind of people, but there's definitely a certain appeal to the more barren landscapes. The more I ride in areas like this (SO MUCH GOOD RIDING THERE!) or even on pavement through the southwest, wyoming, etc, the more I grow to appreciate the emptiness in its own right. You can see forever from a lot of the fire lookouts out there. Buckhorn is one of my faves.
Suzuki DR650 actually. Like a KLR, but 70 lbs lighter dry and air/oil cooled instead of water-cooled, which from my perspective means less stuff to break and leave me stranded somewhere remote.
That bike and I have had some good times the last year and a half. I've put almost 27,000 miles on it since I got it.

Yeah, if you want something to play on the mountains and you have a toy hauler or pickup truck, I'd go for one of the lighter ones and don't bother plating it for the street. There's a LOT of ground I can't cover because even at 350 dry, this bike's a beast in comparison. I've always wanted to be able to go down deer trails etc. which I simply can't do with a bike this size.
There were a few people at the rally with drz400s, they seemed to like them. :3
My riding buddies through death valley were on drzs as well... they did just fine.

It's some really fantastic riding. If you time it right, you could join us for the ADV gathering held every June. I can't express how much I love these people, they are like family.
I've been stopped by more people than I can count who assume it's a Kawi because there's not much visible branding left, haha. That's what I get for going with aftermarket parts, I suppose. :)
Was yours a kicker? It can be a beast trying to turn over that big single. I tried to bump start mine down a parking garage once when my e-start was broken... no bueno.
Even tho this bike is heavy for some of the stuff I end up getting into, I wouldn't trade it. Except maybe for a slightly newer one. ;) Dual sports rock!
