Older models were pulling 13's 12's back in the day, today we're pulling 10's ,11's with modern cars. Due to Cafe standards, it makes sense to put those engines across the fleet of vehicles instead of proprietary engines for particular models.
The good ol' days are vastly exxagerated. We're getting 305HP out of V6's now days and 414hp out of V8's and still able to get 30+ and 25+mpg respectively? I'd say things are pretty good these days.
If you think it's bad. You aint seen nothing yet.
Next year's mustang is getting a 4 banger, slightly smaller. and the F150 trucks are going from a steel frame to an aluminum one. Automotives in north america will go on a slow decline eventually our most sporty options will be something like a ford Fiesta with rare "RWD".

YUS :U.
old muscle cars were pulling in the 300HP+ area. had 4 speeds, and on average had V8's in the 6 Liter ranges.
Now we're getting the same output out out 3.5-3.7L V6's. have 6 and 7 speeds. better compression ratio, and better management of fuel burns.
Modern V8's like the Coyote and LS series and leaps and bounds ahead of 1960's tech.
What is lacking though, is perhaps looks and characters. But that is mostly the fault of government regulations. Cars being more "fat" looking, plastic everything replacing chrome, rounded fronts and guppy looks. All with the intention to make them "pedestrian" safe. As in, The car is designed to disintegrate if you hit a pedestrian.
