I've heard that the /test pin on that kind of micro (It's an Hitachi HD38800) would put them in ROM dump mode with some sort of serial output, yeah. What I really wanted to do is a small demo, but that would have required the display to be a higher resolution matrix, and the ROM to be replacable :(
Thats also fairly common on the older moto devices before they put in lockouts (1995ish) about a year ago i threw together a small rig using an Altera FPGA some level shifters and a dac (home reflow soldering the BGA package almost killed me) and i brute forced several lockout codes and test configs ... but i dont think that i have ever tried for this chip the earliest moto i think i have is from 98
