I may be interpreting the previous Discord episode wrong--granted it was rly bad so I only watched it like one and a half times--but I feel like he actually might kinda sorta maaaaybe consider Fluttershy a legit friend? That's what the episode--and his behavior in the premier--seemed to imply, anyways.
D: Guh, Discord has so much potential to be a cool supporting character. He was waaay better written in the premier than that fanservice-y ep from last season, imo. I've got my fingers crossed they keep it up if he's gunna be a reoccurring face.

I don't mind the fact that they're friends. What I mind is that they showed next to no bonding process and hardly any compassion.
Then they go about waving it around as if it's supposed to be important when the importance in the friendship wasn't thoroughly explained or established.

Maybe he just enjoys having company that isn't constantly trying to defeat him. Kind of a GladOS vs. Chell thing...it's just less trouble to not fight because it's hard and annoying.
Anyway...we know we'll see more of Discord, and really he WAS a suspect, and it WAS kind of his fault...so...the hostility is kind of warranted.

well part of what makes the sudden friendchips seem so off is that this is guy who's been around for more than a thousand years. He's been wrecking shit up for that long and if anything is to change him, it'd have to be very powerful to work in that short amount of time. We weren't shown that.
At least with Chell and the potato, they actually had an adventure together. There were only one sided conversations, but we saw that they spent time together and actually interacted with each other (or just you doing what she says). As time went on, the potato gradually opened up to Chell. That was SOMETHING SUBSTANTIAL. There was no such lenthy bonding with Flutterbutter and Discard and there was no powerful interaction with each other (and I mean POWERFUL. That bit with the ice skates didn't really fell that powerful nor did it make sense because the whole absent of any bonding thing)
As for the hostility bit, I don't feel she even scolded him as a friend. She scolded him like she was a lawyer threatening to press charges because rules n shit. There was the word friend in there, but it didn't sound like it meant any more emotion than a contract would.
I'm not angry at you, I just feel very strongly that I feel this is why this doesn't make sense. It was written by people, and people can make mistakes.

We need a slice of life episode with them. Show what we're supposed to assume has happened between Discord and the ponies. Dunno if we'll get it, hope we do. and I'm not angry at you either. Since season three I've developed this defense mechanism against the excessive nitpicking and drama that happens among the fans of the show. I don't try to blindly defend it so much as try to find some way to make the events make sense in the simple happy world within the show. Doesn't always work, but eh. I try.
I think we all want to see what happened that day before the dinner thing. They have a perfect opening in the episode, too.
I just hope they wont treat it as poorly as they

I think it's less of a mistake of the writers and more along the lines Hasmoney didn't want overreaching archs and wanted eps that can be seen in any order, so they're restrained to cram a what needed to be a long complex story to make sense into essentially 20 minutes of actual animation.
These are good writers working on the show, and I've seen fanfic writers easily put a spin on actual episodes to make them much more serious and complex, but there's no way their stories could be shoved into 20 minutes of air time.

Yeah I got feelin like this too.. Like they could have shown more of their friendship in this before she dropped that line on him, but they pretty much didnt interact much at all before she tossed that line in there.. hell we could have done with a few episodes last season of her just sitting at a cafe having tea with him in the background, that would have been enough.. showing that off camera they did friend things and chatted and what have you.
