Spectra gave her another gentle squeeze before releasing her embrace. “I can’t imagine what it feels like. I know it must get lonely. But…” She reached around the wolfess and placed a Polaroid snapshot on top of the leather booklet. “…you’re not as alone as you think, Erica.”

With that, Spectra patted her shoulder and headed for the elevator.

War Wolf picked up the picture and realized it was a photo taken at the hotel that night by one of the people they’d rescued, someone who must have given it to Spectra. So many cameras were going off, she couldn’t remember which exactly this was. War Wolf stood in the center, arms folded, a stony look of impatience on her face. Vesara and Miracle stood to her right, arms over each other’s’ shoulders, both in the midst of hopping up and down and waving at the camera, toothy smiles on their muzzles. To War Wolf’s left, Strikira was striking a silly, jokingly heroic pose while Spectra smiled and gave a big thumbs-up to the camera, her hand glowing with steelight. Both Spectra and Vesara had one hand up behind War Wolf’s head, each giving her bunny ears at the same time.

War Wolf looked at the heroines in the picture for nearly a minute and, at last, cracked a half-grin before slipping the photo into the leather booklet.
