I liked the episode too. I was also in a rage about MMC, but I actually liked Equestria Girls.
I think it was a stroke of brilliance on the writers part to find a way to remove the Elements of Harmony. Trying to introduce new villains into Equestria is difficult with the all powerful Elements of Harmony around. I even had one story where I just didn't mention them and hoped no one would call me on it.
I also enjoyed seeing glimpses into Equestria's past and I do hope we get to see more of it at some point.
