well looking at many Japanese stuff they have cute things.....most of the time (Grave of the Fireflies and Akira don't have any).
Someone who was being annoying showed characters taking card games too far and there was something overly cute that looked like a mix of Humpty Dumpty and Kirby D:

then you have Teto in Nausicaa, Gigi in Kiki's Delivery service and the Kodama in Princess Mononoke.

I suppose Disney does it too
