Fionn was born and grew up in the magical green hills of Northern Ireland. His favourite thing to do is to dig holes, dig them deep and dig them far. The local villagers all know about Fionn the jackalope because they were constantly falling down his holes and spraining ankles or tripping over! Eventually they had to ask him to either stop digging as many holes, or at least dig them somewhere else. Fionn liked the village and didn't want to leave, so he went to find a suitable spot to dig that wouldn't bother anyone. He found one particular hill he knew hardly anyone walked over, not too far from his home, and rubbing his little paddy paws together he started to dig.
Fionn had been digging for a while when all of a sudden he caught his paw on something. At first he thought it was a root of a tree, so he tried nibbling it, but it was too hard and hurt his teeth. So he tried digging around it, but it was too big! He sat back in his tunnel and stared at the big lump, and as his eyes adjusted to the light he noticed a little key hole. 'Treasure!' He cried, and ran back to the village to tell everyone. Finally his digging had come to something good!
The muddy little jackalope led some of the stronger lads back to his hill and as dusk started to fall they set about with shovels. The evening grew quiet and still, apart from the noise of earth being shifted, and it got darker and darker. Finally it got too dark for the boys to see where they were digging. Then Fionn popped his head out of the tunnel they were following to see why they had stopped.
"We can't see Fionn, we'll have to come back tomorrow," They told him.
"Oh but you're so close!" replied Fionn, and as they looked at him the moon came out from behind a cloud. The bright light reflected off Fionn's white fur and shone in the darkness. "Oh!" He said, and climbed out of his burrow to give himself a good shake. The earth and mud came off his fur and with the light of the moon he shone like a light! The villagers started digging again with renewed vigour and soon got to the treasure chest. The wood was rotten, so they broke it open and out spilled an ancient hoard of coins from centuries of history! There were Roman coins, tudor combs and beautiful jewellery from exotic countries!
No one knows how the treasure got under the hill, but it was shared equally among the people with a bit extra for Fionn and everyone celebrated their new wealth. Fionn didn't stop digging, but his fur always shines brightly in the full moon.
