Yes a wide lens would work well for that camera. I had to look up the 550D model number as I was guessing at MFF that we were talking about the T2i model (and yup, it is the T2i! which is what I used in the past too). You could definitely get closer to ultra-wide than my current camera since you have a lower crop factor.
