I did this just a few nights ago, actually. XN Resource Editor, XVI32, Photoshop, and UPX were the ingredients. I hate the original PortableApps menu color. The pinkish-red is just too glaring. So I rolled my own. I can understand why the PortableApps guys don't really want to support skinning. The point is to keep the programs as small as possible, and every little extra just adds to the size. Hacking it isn't really difficult anyway. And after I was finished, it was five whole kilobytes smaller than the stock version!
FYI: My weapon of choice here is an old 1.0 GB Sandisk Cruiser (Cruizer?) Micro. It came with U3, but that seemed gimmicky and didn't even work on some of the older machines I tried it with.

Reskinned background image (I'll upload the raw image to my scraps here in a minute), and drive capacity/free bar.

Heh, I didn't think anyone would do Portableapps menus here. I must wonder thou if John will ever update it. I think everyone is using the modded one.
Still, the color change is nice. I never liked the red color myself. Perhaps you should try designing one with your own background (sketch, perhaps) on the apps list.

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of after the color switch. "This big white space. It needs something to fill it. Twenty percent opacity." Then I sat with my sketchbook out and tried to think of something that felt right. Nothing happened, so I just left it as-is.
By the way, what "modded version?"

It's pretty interesting. It can be intergrated with an eject button, change those folder options on the right to different folders on your disk, and has a whole gallery of different modded themes to it at http://ptc.kain-planet.de/

Wow, nifty. Thanks for the linkage, I'll have something to look at tomorrow if there's some idletime. It figures I would only find out about this and the official beta after I manually mapped out the guts of the current official release.
Ah, and I think I figured out what would fit nicely in all that white space on the left. Hack5's logo for the U3 Switchblade suite, rotated to vertical. (Is it a "suite?" Whatever the name is for the Gonzor release of the setup.) Not that I would ever have use for software like that... ;)
