The LMG-40 is Drumman-StahlWaffe's greatest contribution to the fighting men and women (and everything inbetween) of the Jagdwehr das Heer. A lightweight and low maintenance weapon, the LMG-40 has an ingeniously simplistic design. Because of this design a very interesting side effect has occured, which also makes the LMG-40 have the most easily recognizable fire-report; a ridiculously high rate of fire.
Indeed the weapon originally was on record as capable of reaching 1500 RPMs, much to the melancholy of MG teams equipped with these weapons. On the one hand the high rate of fire and terrifying sound of this weapon opening up was perfect to the needs of suppressing fire. Not so much in just about everything else. If it wasn't for the push-twist -and pull system for swapping out the barrels, this weapon might easily have been considered a falure.
As it is, the easy method of swapping out barrels was highly praised as was the weapon's rather light weight and remarkably sturdy design. Five years ago a modification kit was released that would allow the weapon's RPMs to be adjusted. Now the more preferred rate of fire is a still very high, 900-1100 RPMs, but there are just those who still like to open up at the old max setting.
They've earned the nickname of Schreckenschrei, Terror Scream.
