They're really big, yeah, and very beautiful in person. Here's a pic I took of one I saw a couple months ago.
Atlas moths can get over 10 inches across (some sources say as much as a full foot). That one was a little on the small side, maybe 8 inches? If you have a butterfly conservatory or museum with a live exhibit in your area, you may be able to see them there. They're native to Southeast Asia but often get imported because they're such impressive specimens.
It's so incredible! I love how you can do cute, elegant cartoony stuff and then you can open a can of wupass and bust out something so beautiful and realistic. I love especially how you've made the wings appear ever so slightly transparent!
I just had this crazy idea: you and me could collaborate on a Moth Poetry book! You paint the moths, and I'll write little poems/short stories for them (kind of like Mother Moon, but based on real moths).

I actually was considering doing a sort of collection of moth images and stories/poems with the working title "Mothbitten" ages ago, but I never really found any direction for it. Obviously we're both going crazy with STUFF right now, but if you seriously wanted to do something like that at some point, I am ON BOARD.

It'd depend on how big we were thinking, but if we put our heads together, we should definitely be able to get something done. I was planning to do a series 2 of these moths but can either integrate that into this idea or move that back timewise if needed. Brainstorming time.
