This is Polistes metricus, a species of Paper Wasp. They're a social wasp that builds papery nests constructed from wood fiber and saliva.
This is a very common species where I live.
I tried to get closer, but it flew away.

Really? Huh. I thought most wasps in North America were rather large. I really don't know much about though so...
The black mud daubers around here can be anywhere from 2-4". They're solitary and quite docile though.
One made a nest outside my door.
Unfortunately I had no camera to capture it with at the time. :(
Maybe this year I'll see another. They're kinda sparse I think though.

You must have a very good camera to get the quality you have in the pictures.
You have a very good technique, I think you may want to look into selling prints.
With a bit of a crop on this picture, and a good printer and paper, you could sell this in a shop/gallery.
And I am not just talking as a friend (I do hope I am a friend to you), I have experience in this.
Looking at your gallery, I can see some very good pictures that on a general market would sell very well.
To nane some
Solenopsis xyloni : Amaurobiidae 5 : Zelus longipes Nymph 2 : Scytodes sp. Head Detail and Curculionidae. Curculionidae is a bit blurry, but that gives it a nice look. =^^=
