Chapter 6
“H-H-Hey mister, could you slow down now?! I think we got away.” Drevin begs Grey to slow down as he tries to pry his head from the head rest of the seat. Grey chuckles “Wish I could kid, once Goldy takes off she won’t slow down ‘til she wants to”. “What, are you serious?” Drevin continues to whine trying not to vomit from this discomforting speed.
Abigail keeps a calm composure as she struggles to reach for her Bracelet. The speed of the ship makes their bodies feel ten times heavier than usual. It was a task just to move a finger. Abigail reaches her Bracelet, she starts typing on it. The ship comes to an immediate decline in speed, sending Drevin flying across the cockpit. Everyone takes a minute to gain their footing. As everyone shakes off the nausea after coming to such a hasty stop, Abigail and Drevin look up to a wonderful sight. They look to see a planet that had a glorious crimson luster. They see another beautiful planet; it was a planet that shined with a navy blue glow. The planet’s shine were a spectacular view, like staring into a whimsical violet painting. The last planet was a brown planet below the two planets, around the planet was debris from ships and satellites. Even though the planet look like it was dying, it had a fascinating look to it. Never before have they seen such a sight. “Wow, so this is what it’s like….off world?” Drevin is mesmerized by the view.
“Hey kid how’d you do that?” Grey unbuckles himself from his chair and turns to Abigail. Abigail gracefully detaches her seat belt, stands up and says “First of all, my name is Abigail Wright; not “kid”. Secondly, your ship only has three terabyte computing power and a double hexadecimal encrypted firewall, it was simple to hack”. “Ok missy you proved how smart you are. What’s with the monkey?” Grey asks.
“That “monkey” would be my baby brother Drevin. He can be a bit off sometimes but what he lacks in brains he makes up in street smarts.” Abigail begins to walk towards Drevin to pick him off the floor and says “Why do you have to be so odd?” Grey just watches them and laughs. “What’s so funny mister?” Asks Drevin after getting off the floor, Grey simply answers “Nothing….you just remind me of my…..don’t worry about it”. “Mh ok, what should we call you then mister?” Asks Drevin. “You can call me Grey” exclaims Grey. “Grey it is then” exclaims Abigail, “Ok pops!” yells Drevin with a smile on his face.
“….so what are we going to do now?” Abigail walks over to the ships console and leans on it. “What do you plan on doing with us? Turn us in to some orphanage and speed of? If that’s what you’re planning then just drop us off on some space colony.” Grey glares at her “Geez kid what’s your problem? I save your hide and this is how you thank me?” “Don’t take it personal Pops. Abby’s mean to everyone at first but when you get to know her, she’s sweet as can be.” Drevin smiles at Grey to try to lighten the mood his older sister brought about. There sat an awkward silence in the bridge, someone or something had to break it. “…sorry, living on our own in LA.X; living there you had to be tough.” Abigail explains to Grey to try to raise the tensions she brought on. Drevin suddenly interrupts with: “Try to relax sis, Pops saved our skins and gave us a ride off that rock. We owe him. What can we do for you Pops?”
“Why is he so cheery and why are you rough around the edges?” Grey looks at the 2 odd siblings trying to figure them out. “When our parents died in a house fire, we had to live on the streets getting by how we could. I spent most of my time in the streets finding food for us or getting some money to spend. But I learned something while I was out there, we can’t be hesitant to accept some help. Better to have friends than enemies.” Drevin intercepts the question Grey was asking Abigail. “You can’t be so trusting Drevin.” Abigail just looks at her little brother. Drevin says “Relax sis, you’ll get gray hair early if you keep this up. Ain’t that right Pops?”
“Your brother has a point and could you stop calling me Pops? I’m not that old…” Before Grey could finish his sentence the ships A.I system comes on “Grey, data analysis for our location is in. We are in the Aankail system. Habitable planets: Mikan, Ghitan, Jhor and The Manufacturing Station: Fort Brace. Nearest dock is located on Fort Brace.” “Thanks Gold, guess we’re landing on Brace. Gold, preform the landing procedure please.” “Yes Sir” Drevin looks around to try to look for Fort Brace. “Where is it?” “Wait for it” Grey points at the big red planet, the kids look closely at it. From around the corner they see a planet sized space station pull from around the planet. The station sent out large ships to the brown planet. The ships began to pick up the debris from the planet. “Whoa…cool, what is it?”
“That’s Fort Brace; it’s a space station that makes weapons, mechs, and ships. They get money by laundering out the machines they build to the highest bitter. They’ll occasionally give refuge to passing ships…for a price.” Grey starts to type in the ship’s main console in attempts to talk to the space station. “Why would a space station like that be in this area?” Abigail couldn’t help but ask. “You’re a sharp one kid…I mean Abigail. You see those 2 big planets? The red one is planet Mikan, the blue one is Ghitan and the brown one in the middle is Jhor. Mikan and Ghitan are at war with each other over planet Jhor. The people of Mikan feel that Jhor belongs to them, and Ghitan feel the same. Fort Brace floats around Jhor collecting any debris so they can melt it down and make more weapons. It’s all stupid if you ask me.”
Abigail looks a bit confused “Why can’t they just both negotiate and share the planet? Why do they have to fight?” Grey just shrugs his shoulders “Religion, land, money I don’t know and I don’t care. They’re fighting over a piece of rock, why they don’t just come together and fix up the planet is beyond me”. A rough voice comes on the ships intercom. “Hey who’s there?” The voice is almost drowned out by the sound of machinery and grinding metal. Grey tries to yell over the background noise “This is Grey of the B.H.C, I pilot the Golden River. I need to refuel and grab supplies.” The voice chuckles “Yea sure come in and dock, hope you have the dough.” The intercom disconnects and Grey says “Piece of crap station, doesn’t even have vidcom. Oh well, I’ll just use the benefits of the B.H.G.” The ship begins to make its way to the space station. Drevin walks up to Grey “Why didn’t you fuel back on LA.X Pops?” Grey scratches the back of his head “Well I landed in LA.X to relax before I went back home to retire. I was going to do one more job to get the money for food and fuel. That job was supposed to be you…” Drevin looks at Abigail with a nervous look, Abigail shrugs her shoulders. The siblings silently speak to each other with their body language, Drevin looks to Abigail as if he’s saying “Say something to him.” Abigail symbols to Drevin as if she’s saying “What do you want me to do?”
Drevin finally convinces Abigail to say something “Um… So you’re a part of the Bounty Hunter Guild? That’s impressive, not just anyone can be in it.” Grey grins “So you know about the B.H.G? Who taught you that? Abigail approaches Grey “I went to school at “The Insitution” they taught us a lot there”. “I’m impressed, you attended Institution and graduated. No wonder you’re so smart. You 2 might want to take a seat we’re about to dock.” Everyone sits down in their seats. The young travelers watch in awe as the ship enters this large vessel as they enter the station they feel themselves pass through something. It feels odd, like they’re going through a thin wall. The kids look around, confused as to what was going on. Grey sees the kids confusion “That’s the atmospheric barrier, it keeps the air in and keeps the station safe from gravitational pull, extreme cold, extreme heat, that sort of stuff.” As they watch the ship dock they look around inside the station. They see large four-legged machines lifting and building ships and weapons. Drevin points “I’m guessing those are the mechs.” “Yea, they’re typically unmanned and remotely controlled.”
The ship finally docks and they make their way off Gold. As the exit the ship they’re greeted by a factory worker. He has a weird smirk on his face as if he’s planning something. “Welcome to Fort Brace, that’s a nice ship there. Maybe for a small price I can guarantee your ship will stay in good condition. If not, then I can’t guarantee anything.” Grey reaches in his coat, it’s hard to tell what he’s reaching for, it could be a gun.
He instead pulls out a badge with the number 7 on it. The worker’s smirk is quickly wiped off his face at the sight of the badge. The worker stutters “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were-“Before the worker could finish his sentence Grey says “I don’t care, just refuel my ship and point me in the direction of the cafeteria. If there is so much as one scratch on my ship, I’m coming after you and don’t think I won’t know if you do something to it. The A.I on my ship will not only alert me but she has a bug in her system that likes to emit a paralytic haze so intruders can’t escape.” Without a second glance Grey puts away his badge and walks off with the kids to the cafeteria.
