Totally get what you are saying. I mean just look at my color scheme. I wear a blue shirt and have orange fur. Opposite colors and all that. But honestly the color scheme of this picture wasn't intentional, it just worked out that way. I do fancy art techniques without meaning to.
The problem is I could keep going on, too... For example, the contrast between the soft focus of the background and the sharp focus of Kit hanging there in the middle bring attention to the focus of the pic, and the small focal point really emphasizes the fact that he is smaller than he was before.
