One of my first new commissions in the cycles engine of Blender. This was a fun one, I got to dive right into the tough work with cycles fur and create feathers and several different layers of fur.
This is a commission for
mrvartruse of his newly redesigned gryphon character.

Thanks, there wasn't a specific one I followed. I use Blender with the Cycles engine and I used tutorials for how to set up fur in this engine. I took that and added a few other nodes to the fur shader to get it looking the way I like.
For the separate colors, I actually used to do separate vertex groups for separate colors and it was such a hassle. Now I just use the fur material and have it map its color from a UV texture I make.
To make the feathers look like this, I use some of the particle settings in Blender. I shift the "clumps" and "parting" sliders to max. It takes clumps of fur and make them all move to a point and look like feathers. There are more complicated ways to do it, but this is what works for me.
