During the bigger matches, like team battles where several students can be battling at once, it's common practice for two or more of the PCA's six referees to be watching from several angles. For Carson that angle happens to be from high above, where he can often see things on a crowded arena floor that may escape the ground-based refs in all the chaos.

Carson also frequently referees in battles that have Flying-types facing off against each other and generally manages to keep things fair, although he has occasionally been criticized by some students who claim that he's too quick to penalize students who dominate the match early on. He just dismisses it as "sour grapes from adrenaline junkies".
