"My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!" - Smaug, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
I'm trying to add more non-avians to my portfolio, and the "How Do You See Smaug?" competition seemed as good an excuse to paint a dragon as any. I've loved The Hobbit ever since I first read it back in 6th grade, and Tolkien's description of Smaug is one of the most chilling of any dragon. At first introduction, he's not the explosive force of destruction most dragon villains are, but rather calm and calculating. To me, Smaug was his most terrifying when laying on his treasure, just rising to speak with the 'thief' he couldn't see. Not only massive and powerful, but cunning as well - even the strongest and most clever could fall prey to his 'dragon-spell' if he spoke to them for too long. I wanted to show him just rising, peering in the direction where he knew Bilbo to be hiding with the threat of fire kindling in his throat, but even his sharp eyes could not spot the invisible hobbit...but he knows where he is.

It's implied that Smaug is one of, if not the, last of the dragons. Can you imagine if he hadn't been killed and had aided Sauron in the War of the Ring? Everyone would be screwed. Forget the beasts the Nazgul flew on - this guy was bigger and could torch everything. Thorin and Co. did everyone a favor by flushing him out to be killed.
Yes! He's one of my favorite fantasy dragons. Too many dragons are just "hey I'm gonna torch everything and be stupid" but not Smaug. He knew exactly how to invade the mountain and keep it to himself (destroying the front gate, pretty much the only entrance, save for that unexpected hidden door!). He played with Bilbo's head through conversation and didn't even attack until Bilbo said something stupid (an insult).
Not bad at all. =D I like it. The face looks a little odd to me, but it could just be a difference of how you draw your dragons. Everyone draws them differently. It just seems like it has far too many horns that aren't even on both sides and the lower jaw seems like it has an underbite. Still a really excellent overall piece though. =)
Yeah, I was trying to do something different for Smaug (usually I draw my dragons with long, slender necks and slender jaws), so I really bulked him up :D I love illustrations of dragons with spines and horns all over the place, and I imagine Smaug, being so old and grand, would have lots of them (I imagine it's an 'age' thing for dragons - the older you are, the more spines/horns!).
I have modeled my self when i was just a whelp to smaug, i have always tried to avoid the hot tempered short fuse that people seem to think we are. Tolkien did make him a tad arrogant though.
In his shorter book, Farmer Giles of Ham, he had a dragon named Chrysophylax dives, "Chrysophylax the Rich. he was more hot tempered, still another great dragon.
