Hey guys, I finally thought of something to post to this Amphibians group of mine! Obviously I'm a huge fan of amphibians and have a few amphibian pets myself, so why not post a few pics of them? :D
This is an axolotl! For those of you who don't know, axolotls are closely related to tiger salamanders but are neotenic - a fancy word that means they remain in their tadpole state for their entire life. Axolotls can live up to 20 years in captivity and come in lots of neat colors. Zasz here is a melanoid, which means he has so many dark pigment cells in his skin that he appears black.
Unfortunately axolotls are critically endangered in the wild. Their only known remaining habitat is Lake Xochimilco in Mexico, which is mostly dried up. However, they have a healthy population in the scientific and pet trade, mainly due to their amazing regenerative abilities which are the focus of lots of neat studies.
So yep! I have more amphibian pictures to post so I'll probably do that in a few days. If anyone else has some nice photos they'd like posted please feel free to note them to me! The more the merrier. :D

Inspired by axolotls and a mix of puppies and kittens apparantly, they wanted it to appear to as many people as possible. Is that axolotl that blue in real life?
Never knew their eyes could shine like that, its stunning. Got a pacman, 2 Megophrys nasuta, and 3 bumble bee darts myself :D

Yes! This picture is pretty faithful to his true coloring, though I'd say in real life you notice the gray more than the blue.
And Zasz is actually a GFP (which means he has that cool jellyfish florescent protein and glows under blacklight), which for whatever reason makes his eyes super green at all times. (And under a blacklight they GLOW like you would not believe. It's almost scary!) Normal axolotls have more normal looking black eyes. ^-^
And that's AWESOME! If you have any good pics of any/all of those I'd love to post them to the group! You should link/note me if you ever are able to take any. :D

This is my baby btw http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13271239/ I got him a while back from the pet store I kinda felt bad for him.. The pet store had a horrible set up they had a bunch of babies together all in one tank and they where going cannibalistic on eachother and they had goldfish in there with the baby axolotls it was just bad altogether I wish I could of got them all and saved them but that would of been way to much money I'm glad I got meep though he grew up to be healthy and happy I have a question though are your axolotls blind because it seems like mine can't tell where food it i have to hand feed him
So cute! It's possible that he's blind being that he came from such bad conditions. When you have food in your hand and wiggle it around or above him, does he move his face to "look" at it? Sometimes it takes them a few seconds to react, but if your axolotl can see it should slowly move towards the food that you're wiggling. Axolotls apparently can't see like you or I do, but they CAN see movement really well, and mine are pretty good at sniffing out food on the bottom of the tank. (Especially pellets and bloodworms, since those both have strong smells.) What are you feeding you little dude?
And that said, I still hand-feed my guy most of the time too. Though I do like making him swim to the top of the tank for the food at least, for exercise. XD
