Things were different then. Confusing, chaotic. But that night I'll never forget.

There we were, together, but not as we wanted to be. It was unfair but circumstances often make it so... I lay there alone, thinking, brooding, my heart aching in silence in what was then this strange, unfamiliar world to me.
I turned over and saw you staring down at me. I don't remember us actually speaking, but your eyes were apologetic, dark with longing and empathy, your lips curled in a very sad, but loving smile that said all that needed to be said.

I smiled too. Slowly you reached your hand over to me and i instinctively reached my hand up to yours. We touched and it was warm and familiar, you curled your fingers into mine and I knew you had no intent of letting go and neither did I.

Through this simple gesture, everything else melted away and that's how we fell asleep, your hand in mine- and that's all that mattered.
