My Christmas present to my dad <3 I knew my Patriotic Eagle was going to go to either my Dad or grandpa and since Dad likes the screaming eagles I decided to do something in that direction.
This entire process was very daunting!!! I am not sure why but even though this is basswood, which is normally ideal for burning, it would not burn nicely for me!!! I turned my burner up higher than I ever have, and would still have to do layer upon layer upon layer to keep the shading nice and smooth. Now you know why I was griping about feathers so much =P
This piece is large, the largest burning I have ever done of this amount of detail. I think it was roughly Length: 21" Width:12" when I measured it.
The hardest part was the stars =)
I know my feathers are not realistic...but I have accepted the fact that nothing I do is every really REALISTIC and so I won't torture myself into trying to be something I am not =D Its just my style!
This is a natural wood burning, meaning no color was added. The "color" you see is the result of a controlled heated tool at various temperatures to achieve the different shaded values =D This image was also taken before I applied a finish on it which turned the wood from a white to a more sepia/aged color.

Not realistic feathers? are you freaking KIDDING ME!?
This is absolutely amazing! this is like..the maximum amount of 'Merican patriotism in the entire world!
You shouldn't put yourself down! This piece it absolutely top notch, and I am completely in awe at the lettering, the implied motion of the wings, the realism in the face and claws, this is truly an amazing piece of artwork.

LOL! Wow....thank you!!!!! But they are not detailed like they should be!!! Way more stylized....I don't know =P I am sure the way he is positioned is not even anatomically correct but most of the time I don't go for what is "correct" and instead go for what looks cool =P
I am still pretty damn proud of this sucker though!!! I am just happy I got it done in time =D I literally finished this up a little after midnight Christmas Eve, so really, Christmas day LOL I was going to add color to the wings to make it look like the American flag but decided against it, and was then going to do the flag in the background as more of a backdrop and just color that but....I decided against that too LOL I was running out of time and really...the more I pictured it the more I felt that it didn't need it. There is enough implied for one to connect the dots =D

sometimes art wins out over "anatomically correct" for serious.
These wings are perfect for this picture and pose, and my mate was saying that the implied movement of the wings takes away form any "anatomical" or "realistic" stylization.
You rock...this rocks...the end :)
I want to share this, it is SO amazing! Maybe we can commission you for a piece for our wedding :)
Wood burning is a SUPER hard medium, and I am always amazed by your immaculate skill

A fellow burning friend of mine told me about a picture of a light house she uploaded to a burning site and how another burner was kinda picking on her about "this is beautiful but where is the light source?!?" I get that there are accurate ways to do some things but I am all about, if it looks good to you screw what other people think =P Maybe not doing what is "correct" is what sets you apart from the rest!
Wood burning is not that hard if you have the right stuff and the right amount of patience LOL This guy was unusually hard because 1. The size 2. The subject (I HATE FEATHERS!!!) and 3. For some reason this piece of wood just hated me LOL
If you are talking about the crafting type burner then heck yes! Wood burning is hard! I could NEVER do that picture with that type of burner, maybe this is cheating? I don't know...I know several burners out there that use more primitive tools than my Optima that do photo realistic portraits that just make me look like a kindergartener drawing stick figures LOL so I am not saying that only the type of burner I use can produce these kinds of images by any means, but I will stand by that they make burning 100x easier because you have all that control =)
If you haven't seen/read my tools of the trade submission give it a look!

I have some links in there to some sites that sell the type of burner i have now and the cheap one I started out with (which I would still be using if my grandfather had not bought my optima as a Christmas gift a few years ago).
As long as I have enough time in advance I would love to do something for your wedding! <3

I have looked at your tools before, that was a VERY informative piece where you explained each of your tools and what they are used for.
And as far as your friend and her lighthouse? everyone's a critic. we see it in art of all kinds!
I am a Belly Dancer, as well as a digital artist here, and I am getting back into music this year as well. So in dealing with artistic people, sometimes people just like to pick at other's art. Sometimes they do it in a seriously trying to help, kindly critique kinda way, and others are just assholes.
Plane and simple. I deal with some DRAMA queens, some that have ZERO time in the studio with teachers or professionals that think they are all that and a bag of chips, others that have studied for a long time, but are very "first world problem" types of people.
And then those like myself in the middle. Not the "perfect" body type, a TON of time studying, not a ton of money to spend on insanely expensive costumes. So sort of the underdogs in my industry are the ones that turn out amazing.
So you didn't do hyper-realistic feathers, it's still amazing, and I'm sure your friend's lighthouse is amazing as well :)
My dad did some wood burning when he was younger, but they never let me do that as a craft..I think they didn't want me to have any type of burn-y things LOL
Though I do good wood work, and heck I am GREAT at welding LOL!
Who knows, and maybe it'll be something I can give a try to, but honestly, if you have this talent, just go for it! Work hard, keep pushing yourself, and don't be afraid to go with what is aesthetically pleasing as opposed to what is "correct"
And yes I will get with you once I talk to my mate about what we would be interested in for our wedding, and how large etc etc :)
Hope all my babbling makes sense LOL!

Hmm...I must tend to deal with more of the asshole end of the spectrum LOL! It can be very discouraging!! I don't know how many times I have almost let other people get me down to the point of quitting my work. There is a very accomplished burner (who I will remain nameless) that said some very hurtful things that really hit me hard for some reason and I almost stopped burning. But...through the support of great friends I managed to get over it hehe. This artist is very, very good, but is equally arrogant which ruins his work a bit for me. I can't respect someone who belittles or tears down others...I think everyone should be able to do what they love no matter their skill at it. Artistic souls are so fragile when on the path to discovery. Critique them yes!! But in a healthy, helpful way.
Wood burners are not that dangerous =P I haven't burnt myself yet! I have a few close calls =P But so far I have been pretty lucky. One very important rule, if you drop the pen DON'T try to catch it LOL!! I would give it a try now that you are "older" =D
Your babbling made sense to me <3
