The Grenadier is primer CA for long range artillery. Equipped with two 188mm Cannons and a back mounted six-shot rocket launcher, this unit's purpose is to deliver a rain of heavy ordinance onto the battlefield to support the allied close range units. Grenadiers are deployed in numbers of up to 4 and are tasked with softening up an enemy installation or brigade and then hanging back to allow the other CAs to mop up any stragglers. The Grenadier lacks any types of close range weapons other than its fists, however if necessary the arm mounted cannons can be used as a bludgeoning weapon. A grenadier squad can be utilized to its full effect when paired with other units such as Satyrus or hellbringers.

I'm sure that if they were resorting to close range combat, they'd have to rely more on their fists than they would the barrels as bludgeoning weapons. Thin hollow metal tubes meant for launching rounds would probably break easily unless they were of a very durable metal. =3
Five star stories right?, I admit I have only seen a few mecha from that manga, but I have seen the first 5 episodes of L gaim and from what I have seen the Heavy metals primarily used beam weaponry, which I want to stay away from. So do mortar heads and HMs have hidden weaponry as a standard or is that only with particular specialized units.?
Mortar Headds from Five Star Stories usually have a fairly large bevy of anti-vehicle and antipersonnel weapons hidden across them. Usually one MH is sufficient to wade through a small army of conventional vehicles. Many of these weapons are conventional in nature, just larger than usual (such as 155mm mortars in shoulder pieces and the like), plus the SMALLEST antipersonnel weapon I've seen on them tends to be 25mm or so, scary stuff to be hit with).
The HM units of L-Gaim were the precursor design Nagano thought of. His ideas shown on L-Gaim evolved into the more powerful and significantly more technically complex Mortar Headds. Weapons meant to be used against another MH tend to vary, including flame projectors, the ever-present melee weapons (various sword designs, many of which are energized or heated), and of course the ever-present beam sabers. Ranged weapons for use against other MH's tend to range from cartridge-fed energy weapons (the equivalent of tossing a nuke at your opponent it's so powerful), to some odd projectile weapons, to flame launchers. Usually, thanks to codes of chivalry, it comes down to a melee-weapon duel.
There ARE specific MH's meant for pure warfare (maximum possible destruction), but these are frowned upon in the chivalry-based limited-warfare environment that is primary in Five Star Stories.
