- Cough Syrup (Feat. Colson) -
A collaborative rendition of "Cough Syrup", Pianos and Orchestration performed by myself and the vocals performed by
colson
Colson approached me to do this song as it has special meaning to him (described below) and this is the result.
Hope you all enjoy!
The song comes with some wonderful artwork once again by
keovi which can be seen here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12367247/
A little note that Colson requested be in the description:
For several years now, I have battled dysthymia - doctors might categorize it as a more mild form of major depression, but most of the time it doesn't feel like that. Sometimes I wake up and for no reason at all, the sky is grey and low, it is cold, faces are unfriendly, and the thoughts - oh, the thoughts - they start spinning yarn inside my head, telling me how worthless I am, how there's lots of reasons I'm alone or I'll never find someone, etc. It can be difficult to interrupt this process, even when you know it's logically wrong.
I've tried lots of things to varying degrees of success to treat this issue - I am lucky to have a support network of friends who don't judge me and are there for me, and I sincerely hope that anyone else suffering from a mental condition is similarly lucky. If you happen to know someone struggling, the best thing you can do for them is to just be there for them. Don't trivialize their pain, but be there for them to lean against. You are not the leg to stand on, but you can provide a strong foundation for them to lean against.
Some days are good, some are not, but every day is a continued search for the magical medicine that is the fabled Esuna. Maybe one day I will find it. Until then, I'll keep searching, and do my best to keep my chin up.
One more spoon of cough syrup, now.

Depression is a subject so often awash with useless platitudes and weak attempts at uplifting phrase. You can hardly move for optimistic claptrap and misunderstanding advice on how you ought to improve your life and just get up and get over it. I find that to be one of the more frustrating aspects of having depressive disorders, just how alien it is to people who have never had to go through it. I know people mean well but nobody with this shit can understand what it is, never mind people who lack the personal experience. I guess all we can really do for now is what this song is essentially doing: airing out some of the things that come to mind. The more creatively, the better XP. Well done on the song, guys.
Very beautiful. I can hear a lot of emotion and attachment to the song through Colson's vocals. It's really hard to hear that other people suffer forms of depression like I do. Mine's been the bane of my life for as long as I can remember. So I completely sympathise and it really hurts to imagine anyone feeling anything near to what I do.
It's very misunderstood and very hard to deal with. I mean, you barely have the fight in you to get through it. Like the text says, it's a blessing to have people who pick you up and keep you going, who don't judge. Without my family I'd not be here anymore and I am so glad they convinced me that I shouldn't give up.
Thank you for sharing the song both of you. x

Regarding Colson’s comment about waking up and having all those negatives fill his mnd.
I once read of an old church that had been built (and still exists) in England a couple of centuries ago. On one of the church’s walls, some words of wisdom had been carved. If not wisdom then perhaps just some day-to-day stuff to help the church’s attendees get through another day.
Anyway, one of the tips that the wise person who carved the words a couple of centuries left us was something like … ‘ pay no attention to the dark thoughts that come to you in the empty hours of the night when you are tired and sleep evades you.
We are at our lowest at that hour of the night and all the inconsequential things that we would easily dismiss during the day suddenly seem threateningly possible. Remember that the What/Who that sends those thoughts to us in the dark and empty hours of the night is a coward and afraid to meet us in the bright sun of day.’
Strength & Peace for just a little while.

Thanks Rooth. Hope your New Year's Eve was enjoyable.
When we consider where our depressions can come from at night when we are already tired and worn out, then that “somewhere” really does seem to be “cowardly” instead of waiting for us to be well-rested and are on top of our game in the daytime to deal with its negative stream under a sunny sky.
While we all have problems that bother us, we can shut off a lot of the “night moans” by accepting that it is night (with its accompanying darkness) and our minds are naturally finding thoughts to match our mental mood (tired and worn out) of the moment. When it is daytime and sunny and we are active, the negative stream is much much less.
Have a Bright and Fun New Year.

Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Bewitches me just how powerfully the strings (violin?) and piano manage the emotion of this song, where electric guitar and drums of the original song seemingly send a completely different message with precisely the same lyrics. Colson's voice calls those emotions so soulfully, it's enchanting.
Well done you guys.

I love this song so much. Shortly after you guys posted this I made some artwork inspired by it. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12369683/
Hope you don't mind me linking it here. I just wanted to share it with ya <3

Let me start off by saying I don't cry often at stuff like this. Its so much that I don't relate, but the melancholy is always mixed with appreciation. However, because of some recent stuff, I just nearly had a ugly cry for the best of reasons while listening to this song. This is beautiful, and how Colson was able to put himself out there, was damn inspiring. Thank you guys for making this.
Colson i always feel the same way =( though trying hard myself to keep on a smiling face. Though sometimes emotions can't be fully controlled and your left feeling pretty much alone and then only ones left are the few who stand by you no matter what. And very beautiful song and still love your voice.
First off, great voice Colson, :)
I first listened to this after a rough day where I was fed up and a bit scared with my life and the way it was going. I read your explanation and while I can't begin to comprehend what it feels like for you, I could relate to your trying to keep your chin up and keep searching. I won't lie, I had a few tears. This song made me feel better :)

Colson *hug* life as it has it many faults and breaks that makes us spin on and on, I am happy to see you fighting on and taking step at a time for everything that enters and leaves through the same door. I suffer from manic depression for 7 yrs and listening to this made me deep down cry irl.
I am happy that you expressed yourself and that your friends, family, and networking of caring people care for you. The greatest thing that most people want in life may be different in their eyes, but always look with yours because they show the one path that will lead to something great than the last.

Vastly better than the original song. Much more emotional, the music fits the lyrics better, the style is much more haunting, Gorgeous. THIS is how a cover should be done if you are trying to make a song your own.
Plus, you can actually understand the lyrics and don't have to deal with the grating voice from the original song.
