Brian Griffin - To Meet One's Maker
Dated 29/12/2013
It seems Brian didn't take too kindly to the Family Guy writers temporarily killing him off under the wheels of a car. If he ever did meet his maker, he'd probably take the opportunity to give him a taste of his own medicine...
Oh come on. Can you blame me?
Even if (like me) you stopped watching Family Guy some time ago, you'd have done well not to hear about the recent fiasco surrounding Brian Griffin's 'death'. Suffice it to say I was less than enthused by the whole affair, not least because I saw the subsequent time-travel-induced resurrection coming from the start. Indeed, the cynic in me suspects the entire storyline was somewhat underpinned by a desire to drum up some discussion and publicity around the show - and from the looks of it, it succeeded too.
However, what I did find rather amusing and surprising was the sheer number of people who immediately got in touch with me to inform me about Brian's supposed demise, and to ask me whether I was ever going to draw him again as a result. My answer to all concerned was 'of course I will' - not just because I suspected the whole thing was only temporary, but also because nothing the Family Guy writers ever do to Brian will have any bearing on whether or not I decide to use him for my own ends.
It did put a mischievous little idea in my head though. And upon hearing of Brian's return, I felt motivated to come up with this little jab at Seth MacFarlane & Co.
Many will be aware that there is some prior evidence within my gallery of my 'interest' in cars running over things (click here if you're not too squeamish). And given that I hadn't had a go at drawing Brian for over a year now, I thought it would be fun to stick him in his Toyota Prius and turn the tables on his creator. This did of course present various challenges, not only in trying to draw the car from such an awkward angle, but also the rather bizarre task of trying to draw a representation of Seth MacFarlane in the style of Seth MacFarlane. It is probably a mediocre effort at best, but you get the idea.
In order to keep the content relatively topical - and also to try and submit one more picture before the end of 2013 - I tried to whip this one up fairly quickly. The drawing was done two days after Christmas, then I managed to finish up the colouring and shading today. I was also able to take a bit of a shortcut with the background by borrowing a few elements from the layouts in my 'Road to the Microverse' animation, albeit rather rushed and sloppy in its implementation. But then who really cares.
I plan on reflecting further upon the past 12 months in a journal entry soon, but for now, here's me signing off for 2013, and I wish you all the very best for the year to come.

It did feel like a bit of a middle finger to the fans in some ways. As if to suggest they could toy with the characters to such a dramatic extent that nothing in the show is sacred anymore. And here was me thinking 'And Then There Were Fewer' was drastic enough.
Will he look like a waffle or a skid mark?
Hehe, nice one, Rex.
I can't help but believe too, that you did this more from your car crush interests, than from any angst toward what they did to that dog. But heh, two birds with one stone is always nice, isn't it?
Just be sure to run him over good, maybe even going back and forth on him a little, too.
And you KNOW some people are going to want to see the aftermath!

You know me, Brumbers - nothing I draw is ever too far away from squishies or smellies of some description.
But in all truth, this particular picture doesn't really 'do' much for me in that respect. I did it not so much for fetishistic reasons but more because I thought it was a fun idea, and one that would ring bells with some people concerning my previous artwork. Plus I genuinely didn't much like the storyline anyway.
There'll be more vehicle-related crushings from me in due course though. Oh yes.

Nah, I didn't want to clog this up with extra panels or additional victims. I can save that for other pictures.
I was aware of the overall moral of the story, which genuinely was quite a poignant one. But ultimately it's Family Guy - it's hard to ever believe the sincerity of anything poignant that happens in the show. I gather the characters were quick to make it known they didn't really give a shit about Brian anyway, which almost kills the point they were trying to make.

I've never watched Grey's Anatomy. And seeing as I'm a big Scrubs fan, I don't think I'd ever be able to take it seriously if I did!
But yes, it did come across very much as a quick shot-in-the-arm for viewing figures. And I seriously doubt those who have shown renewed interest as a result will stick around now the arc has resolved itself.

But if I got right from your pic and description, Brian will supposedly be off just for some time I was afraid they had done him for good (can't hide I've not been an attentive follower of the series in the last weeks, LOL)
now, if you permit me a topic variation, I'd like to show you something curious (if you didn't know yet): http://rainerpetterart.deviantart.c.....past-399624921 it looks like someone got inspired with a certain artwork of yours

I'm surprised people took so much stock in them changing the intro. It's just an intro. It's like the time they had Peter falling down the stairs during the title song - they can mess about with it whenever and however they like.
Anyway, thanks very much!
Anyway, thanks very much!
I think it should be clear to everyone that a series can't just kill one of its main characters, especially not in a cartoon where characters never age and where we are used to see killed characters again. So this was just a bit of a PR Stunt there to show the series is still alive (which is quite a bit ironic).
This is the first time you draw an real life human as opposed to a fictional one (Stewie).
Eh, I think it was someone else who decided the whole "Brian dies" plan since Seth hasn't hasn't written or directed any of the recent episodes.
But this is still a funny scenario.
You know RRRex, this has a great year for artwork for you. My favorite piece you did in 2013 is undoubtedly "Cassie - Nine to Five".
I'm definitely looking forward to your future projects in 2014.

This is true. Brian's death was something pitched in the writer's room and was liked quickly. I doubt Seth really had control over it. Besides, he probably was more of the reason why Brian ended up coming back so soon, or at all for that matter. Seth loves Brian just as much as we do, something a lot of fans forget. I doubt he'd really let anything bad happen to Brian. :P
Well as I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm not particularly fussed as to whether Seth actually did have much of a role in this story - I chose him as a symbol for the writing team as a whole.
But thanks, jordan. I actually felt 2013 had been quite a poor year for me artistically. I did some good individual pieces but was enormously frustrated by getting so little done.

Oh I can understand that. In the more recent Family Guy episodes I have seen, I've found the writers have made Brian into something of a self-righteous bore who has difficulty following his own advice. I detest the political storylines they do with him.
Heh, Seth getting what he just deserves >:3 of course, I myself am a huge Brian fan X3 right down to the sona, i was glad to see the community pull together like that after his apparent "death" As for Vinnie though, why so much hate around him? I myself am Italian and I like him X3 I mean yeah he's no Brian, but theres no reason to get pissed at him X3 In fact, i think there should be more Vinnie art X3 fetish or otherwise :3 but anyway, glad to see Brian getting some good old fashioned revenge >:3 great pic X3
I think the response to Vinny was always going to be heavily affected by the simple fact that he was presented as a 'replacement' for Brian. That would have automatically turned a lot of people against the character from the off, regardless of what he was like.
