I think that you are right about that. GIFs are OK for flat coloring but not well adapted to smoothly shaded pieces. Try a PNG, too - the file may not be much larger than a JPG for this type of art, and the quality is even better than a JPG.
I'm glad that you shaded and highlighted Moxie - it really adds depth. I hope that you will do more like this.
