I've set my desktop to look as 'no-frills' and down-to-the point as possible.
No fancy background image, no eyecandy animations, no displaying 58 millions of colors to show a menu. No need for those shineys.
Despite I use Windows XP, I've downgraded colors as much as I can in order to have an utilitarian desktop, and have grouped the icons of programs, apps and folders I use the most in 'clusters' scattered around the screen. This is cool, but now and then Windows messes with my icons and I've got to spend a few minutes to rearrange my desktop.

I used to do that before I switched to using RocketDock to handle all of my essential programs and shortcuts.
The automatic-XP-icon-rearranging thing is a pain in the ass, but if you're going to use this method, let me recommend: Shock Desktop
