It's a comical take on the ether scene from the movie 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', originally a book written by renowned American author & sports journalist Hunter S. Thompson.
Johnny Depp portrays Thompson's character; Raoul Duke (the character actually a pen name of sorts for Thompson himself), and Benecio (sp?) Del Toro as Dr. Gonzo (based off of Thompson's real life Samoan attorney). Interestingly Depp and Thompson were very good friends for a long time, right up 'till Thompson's death (I believe it was 2006-7?).
